us in the car...us in the car...us in the car...

this is when it was still fun
Yesterday we were on our way out of San Sebastían, our mode out...by a rental car. We got this crazy idea from the Isralei´s we met...they were doing it, so why not us? We only were going to have it for tomorrow and get ourselves to Oviedo...and we were so close, so close to doing it smoothly and easily...

I was the driver...since I am the only one blessed with the gift of driving a standard car in our group. So the little red Leon, compact european car was all mine. It was really fun to drive actually and the area we were leaving from and going to was beautiful. We went to Gernika...the small town that Picasso painted his infamous Guernica painting about...it was bombed by German planes right before WWII during the Spanish Civil War because there was a Basque uprising there and the local government wanted to make an example of the people. It was so amazing to read about, they are such an example of peace... Then we were driving along the coast and later just north of Picos de Europa National Park...stunning: mountains and ocean right in view. We found ourselves in a small town

called Colombres playing soccer with little boys and listening to the cowbells on the hills for awhile yesterday...

But the story goes like this...that we had arrived in Oviedo, our final destination and even found our hostel and the car was safely parked in an aparcimiento (underground parking garage) nearby. It was upon leaving the parking garage, which is made for small compact european cars, that the concrete post got in the way. I had to reverse and go forward at least six times and there were cars behind me waiting for me to get out, rushing me along, and the airport drop off was 30 km away...needless to say the post won by a long shot and our car rental cost us about one euro for each kilometer we drove....that is right ladies and gentlemen our damage was €550...which is a lot more when you translate that to dollars. An expensive laugh and lesson to say the least. Everything should be fine...I am hoping, we´ll see soon. Don´t worry relatives, parents, ex-coaches, there will be no more car rental experiences for us. I am all for mass transportation, where the responsibility is on someone else...just get yourself there

and that is it.

So yeah...that is that, I am trying to not let it wear me down though. I want to feel bad about it, but it was just an accident and it is just money, life moves on. Today was a wonderfully relaxing day of seeing Oviedo a college town that is full of statues (one of Woody Allen), amazing architecture and a little old man who ate some cachuettes (peanuts) with Sarah and I and told us all about school systems here... Tomorrow we leave for Salamanca, another smaller college town. Then to Toledo, which is near Madrid and we are trying to stay at a castle/hostel there...pictures will be forth coming soon.

That is all for now...tonight we are going to eat falambra, the local Austrian meal...i´ll let you know how that tastes.

Ciao and besos for everyone.

This is a tree that survived the bombing, more or less. It is really symbolic to the Basque community, this city is where the leaders meet to discuss prevailing issues, to this day, and the tree is their symbol of unity: people from all around the Basque region meet under the tree to be be a community/region/people.
