Has spring finally sprung? With blue skies and a warm feel in the air (well, anything that's not a biting wind feels warm these days!) we decided to take our car, affectionately nicknamed the Bogey Buggy due it's yucky green colour, out for a spin. The snow has cleared from the nearby hills and it felt wonderful to be out on the roads and wondering if the air conditioning will be needed soon!!
We headed out South East from Pamplona looking for the turn off to Aoiz which we had seen only on a map and wondered if we might be able to walk around the banks of its reservoir. Needless to say, we missed it! Not to worry, we picked up the road we needed when we got to Lumbier, a place we have visited before, and soon enough we were there. We drove straight through the town and up to the reservoir. It was quite a surprise to find the road closed so we parked up and hopped over the barrier. Did we break any laws? Who knows!! We got a nice view for our troubles but there was nowhere for us to walk so we headed back
to the town.
Aoiz is a pretty enough town but in truth there doesn't seem to be a lot there. We wanted to call in at the Tourist Information Office but, guess what, it doesn't open until April. That's a shame but by the car park was an informative map which showed us some routes for a short hike.
We began by walking down the hill to the old stone bridge which was restored quite recently. The river is still quite high and the water is certainly in full flow. That wasn't our concern though as our footpath took us uphill through the pine forest. It was wonderful and the air felt so clean and fresh. At one stage we took a wrong turn but we soon found the right path and before we knew it we were in a clearing at the top of the hill with amazing views out towards some mountains where a little bit of snow was still clinging on. It wasn't a difficult walk but after a winter of relative inactivity we found it hard going at times!
We were looking for a spot to sit and have our lunch when we
No Entry!
Didn't stop us from going up to have a look! heard a horrendous noise in the skies. We watched on as a flock of what we presume were storks flew around. What a racket they made! It was so nice to sit out in the sun munching our sandwiches.
The track back to Aoiz was a bit too concreted for our liking and it was certainly tough on the knees and feet. We had nice views of the reservoir through the trees to take our minds off the descent. Back in town we couldn't find a bar where we could sit outside and enjoy a drink in the sunshine. Instead we stopped at a hotel just a few kilometres away and made the most of the opportunity. You have no idea how good that one beer felt as it slid down. Very refreshing!!!!
Let's hope the good weather is here to stay now.
