Hi, Well we are in Sarria. About 20 kilos from our last stop. We have a dog here that is chased away from every restaurant 20 times and just moves on to the next. A nice enough dog, but a beggar. The locals apparently know him. I would probably keep him, Because he is non allergenic. He also doesn't seem to be a pest. O and by the way I didn't check, so I assume the He part. It's weird to watch people harvest potatoes? What a ball busting amount of work for a spud. And to think how much us Americans take advantage of a bag of potatoes. I have watched these people harvest there food daily and I sweat watching them. Bless the farmers for their work, it is far harder than we think ... read more

Yes, well folks it all comes down to the next two days as far as finishing the first 800km is concerned. It is hard to believe the number of towns that we have all been through which have a large dependence on pilgrim euros. Of course as soon as I am 50m on the far side they merge into a collection of towns in my head unless there is something special about them. I am looking forward already to being reunited with all the gear I sent on from St Jean Pied de Port, Pamplona and Logrono! Not to mention my compostella and a hug from the bishop. My real hope for Santiago is to be reunited with many pilgrims I have jumped ahead of along the way of course. In Galicia there is a rollo ... read more

We set off, originally for Portomarin, a 24km stretch with a bit of a climb ..........for the previous almost 700km we had spent time with and passing/being passed by folk who seemed to be of like mind........we'd been in numerous Albergues which were all physically quite different to each other, yet their inhabitants whatever their country of origin were universally the same............ people talked quietly to each other in the sleeping areas, lights went out at 10.30 each night, fellow pilgrims were helpful and respectful - for instance people took short showers - ensuring hot water left for the next person - meals and resources (eg for footcare etc ) were shared sometimes. There was a camaraderie built on the toil of walking the shared path , on the amused and rueful recognition of the aching ... read more

We accidentally had a large pilgrim menu for Lunch - due to a break down in communication with the women in the bar..... walking after soup/mains/dessert was.... sloshy ! lol I'm glad we didnt have the bottle of wine that we'd normally drink after an evenings pilgrim menu ... We continued all that day through beautiful scenery - like walking through a constant postcard..... just as we came into Triacastella we passed a tree that had a (thankfully) English translation also on the plaque saying the tree was approx 800 yrs old - We sloshed along... it was a long day of 30km - happily our backpacks were waiti... read more

We got up the next morning our clothes were dry that we had hung over the heater...I went and put my soxs and boots on and they were full of ants.....I think they had come up through the floor boards to the heat and thought my boots were a good place to sleep or build a nest....It is the overflow room after all....one good thing someone else had to put up with the snoring man we didn't hear him. We went down to the same pub and had breakfast and set of the two Thomas's were going the short way and we decided to take the longer but not so hilly way.....the book lied ….it was hilly.....it was up and down all day.....a very long day.....still took heaps of photo's and there wasn't much rain...nice change ... read more

It seems ages since we last had a chance to blog. Lots has happened and we´ve covered many more kilometres. We´re now in Galicia and are in Porto Marin. We´ve completed over 700 kms and have less than 100kms to go before we reach Santiago! I´ll give you a day by day account of all that has been happening since El Burgo Raneros. Mon May 14th El Burgo Raneros - Mansilla de las Mulas 19.5 kms Up at 6.15 and breakfasted across the road. Had a very pleasant walk in flat but pretty surroundings. We passed a bird reserve and I was amused by the rather ungainly antics of a stork waddling around in the shallows - a bit different from their graceful flight! Eventually we reached Mansilla de las Mulas and checked in at the ... read more

Last time I wrote was a week ago, on Monday night, sitting in the living area of the beautiful hostel in Fonfría. I have not been able to use a proper computer for some time! So much has happened.... Very early Tuesday morning I was woken by an interesting situation. I was sharing a room with my new friend Deborah, and I had bandaged my foot too tight so woke up around 2.30am with throbbing toes. I sat up and took off the bandage, then noticed an itch on my shoulder. I rubbed it in the dark, feeling a small soft ball rubbing under my fingertips. A bit of fluff I thought. Then I had another itch, and another ball under my fingertips. So I went to our bathroom, turned on the light and took off ... read more

Hi everyone, Well finally my best buddy has joined me on the walk of a lifetime! We have both walked 23kms today to now be in Portamarin... a tiny town just four days walk from Santiago. Bill arrived in Lugo last night after 3 days travel which inlcuded four flioghts and a bus trip. needless to say I have left him sound asleep right now in our room. He is exhausted and after such a trip and carrying a far-too-heavy pack he is a shattered pilgrim. I am sure though that with a good nights sleep maybe helped along by a cervesa he´ll be fine and ready to go the next 26kms tomorrow.... I am an optimist, Iknow!!! I had a taste of luxury whilst waiting for Bill. I left Sarria on Saturday morning and travelled ... read more

This feels like a good time for an update on our language progress. It's fair to say we're making steady improvement although our grammar and vocabulary perhaps worryingly limited to the more functional actions of the day. Conversational Spanish is still relatively embryonic as the locals high linguistic tempo and varying phrasiology send us quickly to a place where we do not have the grammic fire power to survive. However, careful analysis of the Spaniards bar and cafe chat has unlocked a few useful keys to our future progress. These are the six words that can help bluff you through any exchange as if a fluent speaker (well almost). Here you go: valle = ok; venga = let's go / come on; claro = of course; mira = look; di-me / diga-me = tell me; mas ... read more

Two days ago we crossed the highest point of the Camino. O Cebriero is the village that sits on top of this climb. The night before we were due to cover this accent there was many a worried glance between Pilgrims in the refugio as they cooked up their carbohydrate to prepare for the following days excertion. Some (including those who had walked as far as we have) had even gone so far as to arrange for their backpack to be especially transported for them as they felt unable to make it otherwise. Pilgrims can be a strangely worrisome bunch at times for the adventurers they might like to see themselves as. We woke up stopped for toast and coffee at the bottom of the climb (still rather intrigued to see what awaited us) then 90 ... read more
