We woke up with hangovers and a few blackouts from the previous night. I felt that embarrassing tension that often comes the day after you spend a night drinking with people you’ve only recently become friends with. I love it. Frederick swore never to drink again, but the rest of us planned to visit the fountain of wine that night and see what happened… We sat outside the refuge watching the sun rise and eating our breakfast, in the company of a gorgeous little dog! Oh how I love dogs! He was sooo cute, I gave him some of my tuna. I remembered that one of my friends had asked me once what animal I would be if I had to choose. Straight away I’d said a dog. They just have such happy, simple lives. So ... read more

Our next stop was Vigo, Spain which is on the coast and north of Portugal. While we were traveling we noticed that many of the houses along the road had a building in the yard that looked like a mausoleum that you would see in a cemetery except it was raised up from the ground. It turned out that these were granaries. The religious symbols are placed on the top to protect from evil spirits that might try to land on the roof. We saw in the estuary were the river flows into the sea what looked like rafts in a square pattern. It seems they farm shell fish like mussels. They secure ropes to the rafts and plant the ropes with fertilized eggs. After the mussels are grown they pull up the ropes and do ... read more

The Cathedral del Apostol is gorgeous. I can only imagine what it´s like for someone who´s done the camino, to arrive at this destination. It´s a little crazy here due to the influx of tourists and pilgrims but the vibe is great. The Cathedral takes up a whole chunk of the old city, the rest of it is easy to walk around although most of the shops are tourist-oriented. I've tried the pulpo a la galega (octopus with sea salt, olive oil and paprika) and it is delicious!! Also met a group of Spanish people who gave me a taste of ´queimada´ - alcohol in a clay bowl with lemon skin and coffee beans, and then they set the whole thing alight! Was here during the forest fires in the region - some days you could ... read more

Hola Amigos Well my journey proper is over. I arrived at 9:30am this morning to the centre of Santiago de Compostela & the mecca that is the Santiago Cathedral - its a huge imposing building. I made my way to the Compostela office & got my Compostela certificate which is folded nicely & will find it´s way to the bottom of some shoe box back at home I´m sure! Some of you will be amused to know that I attended the Pilgrims Mass! Every day they hold the mass for the Pilgrims who arrived that day. It´s all said in Spanish - so needless to say I understood everything! They read out all the nationalities & the places they all started from - I actually heard mine being called out - "uno Australien Pamplona" that´s me ... read more

So am now here in Santiago. Have to say it was a little bit of a let down arriving here. Perhaps let down is the wrong phrase really. I guess we, everyone has said the same, were expecting excitement and jubilation in front of the cathedral. This didn´t happen in fact most were sad. Don´t get me wrong Santiago is a beautiful town and I could definately spend a few days here wandering the streets eating fantastic seafood and spending time with good friends. Sam summed it up best yesterday with an analogy of the Wizard of Oz. The Camino is our yellow brick road and Santiago was our wizard. However, upon our arrival we found out that Santiago was nothing really. What makes the real Camino is those tinmen, Scarecrows and Lions we meet along ... read more

The Atlantic coast in winter - with the wrong roll of the dice it could be death by precipitation... ...We'll that roll of the dice went completely against me. After a scenic route from Palermo, via Milan and Madrid, the descent into a huge hailstorm in Santiago was something of shock: The rest of the journey had been through cloudless skies, chasing a drawn out sunset across the south of France, the horizon dividing the dark blue of the sea and the lighter blue sky with a band slowly melting from yellow to purple - then finally sealing together in a seamless blue. Taxis were not much in evidence on arrival (at midnight) but eventually one came before I succumbed completely to hypothermia. That my first purchase in Spain was a brolly says it all; rain, ... read more

This is the story of our journey across the Camino Frances from St Jean to Santiago de Compostela by foot - Finally completed for those who have nagged us into it… writing the blog was almost as demanding as walking the route! Almost... Anyway to answer the obvious we wrote the blog as we got sick of answering the same questions - no we are not mad, and yes we enjoyed it, and yes we would gladly do it all again. Why - well while we are both pagans, travelling ancient pilgrimage trail has great appeal, as in NZ while the tramping is great we don’t get to tread on Roman roads or sleep over the bones of saints, so we (perhaps naively) though why not. We didn’t expect (or want) to be forgiven for our ... read more

Santiago de Compostela - Plasencia - Navalmoral de la Mata (Bus) The night was cool and it rained for most of it, it rained great big rain drops making the night so cosy. When the group left in the early hours it was raining moderately and continued to rain and drizzle until the afternoon. On such a morning it was glorious to be able to stay in bed a little longer. After a luxurious shower and packing our things we headed of for breakfast of hot churros and chocolate. I had to return later as I had left my walking stick behind and was lucky enough that it was still there, I had bought my own pelegrino stick complete with shell and water pumpkin. Au and I met Nua & Joselito at midday and had a ... read more

Santiago de Compostela (Day 8) Camino Portugues from Caldas de Rey to Padron (20km) Caldas de Rey - Padron (20km) Woke at 4am but had the best sleep so far in the trip. Then rested until 6am and headed off be 6.30am while still dark. We left out backpacks outside the cafe to let others know where we were. We had toast and coffee. Photo with 'Franco' at doorway as well as many along the way with lovely tranquil scenery of the countryside. Lovely trees, ferns, moss, small amount of flowers and many areas of rural lands with corn and vines along gentle undulating slopes. Only walked along small amount of asphalt areas and managed to take several photos of locals at work and in the streets. A very old lady sitting on a low stool ... read more
