Geo: 42.8804, -8.5463Though our bus departed Salamanca nearly 30 minutes late, we still arrived in Santiago de Compostela a few minutes ahead of schedule, surprisingly. Also a surprise was how cold and dark it was - it looked like the middle of the night, and the sun didn't start to brighten the sky until well after 9 AM. We made our way down to the Hostal Pazo de Agra - though we had asked fo... Read Full Entry

Pilgrims - one of the best experiences you can have in Santiago is watching them arrive. There were relatively very few this time around.

We stopped for a quick coffee and juice and also to use the free Wi-Fi at Recantos bar, before heading over to the cathedral. We didn't expect any free tapas in Santiago, but we were given some Manchego cheese, Serrano on bread, and a piece of tortilla along with our drinks. Talk about value - drinks, food, and free Internet! This made up for the fact that my coffee was only good, not great like the one from this morning's breakfast.

Bizarre bakery offerings - looks more like internal organs than baked goods.

Bread - ok. Estrella beer - always good. Caldo Gallego - surprisingly no seafood, it was a thick soup with potatoes, chicken, and vegetables. It had a bit of an odd flavour to it, and wasn't very good. Scallop gratinee - an overpowering tomato sauce smothering a scallop, with bits of jamon, and all baked. Not so good, either.

Mary's paella - not so good, but we weren't sure why. The seafood was perfectly cooked and the rice wasn't overcooked or hard as it can be with some paella, but the flavour just didn't seem right. Surprisingly, there wasn't any chorizo in there. Caldeirada - wow! Two types of fish, merluza and rape, both good but with different textures, the merluza like a typical fish, but the rape with a much denser texture. Mussels, clams, shrimps, potatoes, all in a thick tomato sauce and most of it perfectly cooked, it was a veritable fiesta of seafood. Yummy! The only bad thing was that the shrimps had that slightly fishy flavour because they were still in their shells, so their veins had not been removed

Dessert - Santiago tart, nothing overly complicated, but good, soft cake with a nice almond flavour. Flan - good, not rubbery like the one at lunch, and the flavour was also quite good.
