On the second day, the prodcedure to get ready seems already more obvious. After breakfast, despite the noise of the city Vigo, the “Camino—pace“ is quickly back. The slow mode of travelling seems already more normal and you know: you will reach your goal, step by step, in a steady pace. We briefly visited the city's fish market on the way. In a local shop we got some water (the flavour of tap water is worth to avoid at any price…) and some sunflower kernels for our way. Leaving the busy atmosphere of city and traffic noise behind, after 20 minutes we were dwelling on some calm paths, enjyoing the view and meeting mostl co-pilgrims. The great landscape of the fjord-like topography followed us like a great documentary cinema. Shortly before lunch we chose a detour of ... read more

Before I start today’s blog, I need to mention something that happened yesterday. My backpack arrived safe and sound, but I received an email stating that they found 45 Euros in my envelope instead of the 7 that it costs, and that tomorrow I need to either send only 2 Euros or add 2 Euros. My Spanish isn’t perfect, but I verified that that is what they said. It didn’t make any sense, as there is no way I’d put two 20 and one 5 Euro notes in the envelope instead of a 5 Euro note and a 2 Euro coin. I replied and told them I was assuming they meant 5 Euros instead of 45 Euros, and that I’d put 9 Euros in for tomorrow. Apparently I was right, as they apologized and clarified later ... read more

I'm trying to get caught up on my blog posts, so you may see several in the next few days. We're actually In Madrid now, having made it to Santiago last Sunday. Sunday, November 19 to Baiona, Hostel Santa Maria Playa, 12.3 kms. It was dark again when we left at 7:45 and stayed that way for quite a while as we had mountains to our right that blocked the sun. Although it was just 12 kms. to our room at Baiona we were trying to catch the 12:00 or 1:00 Mass at Santa Maria de Baiona, a 13th century built church.. Again, no breakfast until 9:00, it being a Sunday, but the hotel made us a small tray of bread, oranges and juice, but no coffee! We thought we’d find something on the way, but ... read more

September 23. Friday, Vigo to Redondela, day 24, Hostel Antolin Fitbit: 12.39 miles, 28,359 steps, 58 stairs. Garmin 12 miles. After our rest day in Vigo on 22 September listening to the vibration hammers doing renovations at Hotel Junqueira, we were happy to have breakfast and be back on the Camino. We had planned on spending this day visiting the Islas Cies just out of the bay. They can be seen offshore in many of our photos. But the trip did not seem too inviting, as it is an overcast day, so we did not go. For our rest day we sat downstairs in the hotel bar and worked on blogs until lunchtime, then walked to the El Corte Ingles for their cafeteria and did some shopping. Much to the delight of the other three we ... read more
