En ... read more

My time in Ourense is coming to an end. My program, and coincidentally my lease, are over today, so I’m moving on out. This summer, after a short stop in Barcelona, I’m going to be improving my English teaching skills by working for a non-profit organization in Italy called ACLE. They teach English at 1- or 2-week summer ‘camps’ all over the country. ‘Tutors’ like me are hosted by families in each village or city, so it’s going to be a great immersive experience. All that traveling means I’m just taking a traveling backpack for 3.5 months (with a 10kg plane weight limit)! A new challenge! I’ll also have limited access to internet (not really sure how much) and no laptop, so bear with me on updates. After the summer, I’m moving to the coastal Galician ... read more

An acquaintance was in Spain traveling for a month, and she ventured to Ourense for a week in April. It was cool to have a visitor because it made me see Galicia with fresh eyes again. Now, I don’t know if she was being completely honest, but she said Galicia was her favorite part. I had an odd sense of pride ;-). She’s an outdoorsy person, and Ourense in good weather is great for walks/runs/bike rides/being in nature. While she was in town, we had a few adventures. We finally went to my neighborhood tapas place (my male roommates frequented it, but I’d never been), called Luxxury II for who knows what reason. We arrived in the middle of a soccer game on TV so we had a real immersive experience. When you order one drink ... read more

It’s been a while since I’ve posted something. I’ve gone on a few trips (which just might be posted about soon), but a lot of my life has been more just hanging around Ourense. So, I wanted to write about this 8-month home I’ve got. I’ve spent the vast majority of my time in Galicia, so it’s difficult for me to compare this area to the rest of Spain, but one of the things I love is what Galicia is known for in the rest of Spain—the precipitation. It really hasn’t been that rainy here—unseasonably dry/warm weather most of this winter—yet the traditional stone buildings and stone walls are often covered with plants and moss. There’s something about moss-covered stones that’s just so beautiful. While I’m on the topic of precipitation, I’ve never lived in an ... read more

Disclaimer: this one is more about the un-glamorous side of living abroad. I got a haircut this morning. Haircuts are stressful to begin with, and add in a foreign country and non-native language, and you’re flirting with true disaster. Hahaha, not really, but in Korea once, I intended to get a new look, and I ended up with a slight bit of bangs and no other change to my hair. This time, I actually meant to get the haircut on Monday, but either due to miscommunication or the lady truly having a totally full schedule, I ended up making an appointment for this morning (Wednesday) instead. Sure, I was able to schedule the appointment, and generally express, with the help of a picture and pre-learned key vocabulary, my desired haircut. Yes, those things made me feel ... read more

This one is about my arrival in Ourense and that tricky transition period of beginning a new life in another country. On September 23, I took a train from Porto to Vigo, Spain. It was a way shorter ride than I expected. I took a nap, and suddenly we were there. Luckily it was the final stop, because we were somehow an hour early. I had booked my next train--to Ourense--a bit later in case there were any unexpected delays, so I had four or so hours to waste in the train station. I could have walked around the city, but I didn’t feel like hauling all my stuff. I ordered a green tea (in Spanish) in the station café and got it, in the first test of my Spanish abilities in real life. Then I ... read more

Vigo and Ourense in western Spain 12 October 2014 We had a late start after many phone calls to South Australia. Love you all. The sky looked a little dark when we set off at 11.00am and whilst driving the 90kms to Vigo, we drove through several showers of rain. When we arrived in Vigo, it was Sunday, the Tourist Office was closed and even though is was a medium sized city, the streets were very quiet. All we had was our GPS which included the attractions we could see, as well as my notes on the city. We did know that during the Middle Ages the small village of Vigo was part of the territory of Portuguese speaking neighbouring towns, and suffered several Viking attacks. However, the number of inhabitants was so small that, historically, ... read more

Ribeira Sacra Ribeira Sacra (Sacred Riverbank) is a stretch along the Sil River east of Santiago de Compostela where there were an inordinate number of churches and monasteries. The Sil also carves its way through the vertiginous Canon do Sil which provides dramatic landscapes and numerous miradors (viewpoints). It is to this part of Galicia we headed next. After a twisty drive down a narrow country road we reached Mosteiro de San Pedro de Rocas (Monastery of Saint Peter of the Rock). The main building has been renovated and turned into a visitor’s center but it was closed for lunch and we had the place to ourselves. Although we could not go into the Monastery, the attraction here is the church; it is carved into the mountain hence the name “…of the Rock.” It was ... read more
