Last night we finally had Pulpo for dinner. I had mine with Galecian soup and caramel flan for dessert. It was cheap and very filling. The albergue we stayed in had 20 beds in one room but only 2 tenants, us. I grabbed a few extra blankets from other beds and didn't use my sleeping bag; John thought this was a health risk. I think what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger. We spread our gear out, locked ourselves in for the night and had a relatively early night. I turned the lights on at 6.30am for an early start. I had set the alarm for 7am but decided, rather than listen to another 30 minutes snoring, we may as well get up. By 7.20 we were seated in a local Bar having a coffee. The ... read more

26 September 2016, Monday, Caldes de Reis to Padron, Day 27, 14.8 miles. Hotel Pazo de Lestrove, a member of Pousadas del Camino network of hotels. Ruminating on Roman Roads. Ah, Karen here. Remember I have said, a number of times, that this blog is to serve as a memory jog of certain feelings, events or memories of our Camino. So, bear with me as I do not want to forget these roads! I read the guide and see we have a section of a Roman road coming up and I am both delighted and filled with dread! I love these roads but how my feet dread them. And what is the appeal of a Roman road? One steps upon the first big stone and, for me, I enter another world. These roads were built before ... read more

Thursday 7th January, 2016. La Corona, Spain M had a lie in as it was hammering it down outside and we were not going to arrive until about 12.30 (some 4 hours or so later than scheduled due to the horrific weather). D went for some breakfast. We spent the morning on board and M had a light lunch of soup before we decided to brave the weather and go and have a look at the town. The province of Galicia, of which La Coruna (population 252,000) is the capital, is a unique area of Spain (where M's favourite wine comes from). Its geography with two coastlines exposed to the Atlantic and numerous sunken river valleys similar to those in Cornwall, addds to the feeling that you are in an ancient land. The Celts were, in ... read more

Galicia is about a quarter of the size of Pennsylvania, which doesn’t seem too big, but without a car, it’s been a bit difficult to explore the countryside and more rural areas outside of major cities. Though, I also haven’t seen a lot of other cities here yet either! Luckily, this past weekend, my roommate’s Breton friend invited us on a road trip! Before we left, our Galician roommate gave us a massive list of sights along the Costa da Morte (Coast of Death). The Costa da Morte forms basically the northwestern stretch of Galician coast. Why is it called that? It’s had a lot of shipwrecks over history. Naturally, my expectation for the scenery was a gray, stormy place, and I even half-expected to see wrecked pirate ships on the beach. As it happened, for ... read more

12 October, 2015, Monday. Stage 36 (penultima dia) Today is a holiday in Spain, consequently several places are closed. GPS: 11.52 miles, 4 hours 25 minutes moving. Left Hotel Suiza at 0828 and arrived at Hotel & Restaurante O'Pina at 1341. 5 hour 13 minutes later. Fitbit: 11.95 miles, 27,367 steps, 96 floors At the hotel we had dinner last night at a table for two with one table for 17 and another for 12 or more. This morning we find out the 17 are bike riders and most are from Costa Rica but some from Germany. Yesterday on the trail we noted that many of the bike riders do not give you warning and speed by you. Later today it was the worst we have seen. Last night for dinner we had traditional Arzua cheese ... read more

10 October 2015, Saturday, stage 34, Palas de Rei to Melide GPS: 8.82 miles, moving 3 hours 38 minutes. Left Hotel Casa Benilde at 0906 ( so much for an early start to beat the rain). Arrived at Hotel Carlos 96 at 1426 after 5 hours 20 minutes. Fitbit: 10.4 miles, 23804 steps,79 floors We went to bed optimistic that we would not have rain today. We awoke at 0600 to the sound of rain on the tile roof just outside our room window. After slowly packing and getting all the rain gear out for the day, the rain had stopped. Taking the bags down, the wonderfully friendly man, Francisco, at the desk said no rain until 1700 but the tropical storm would bring wet and windy weather tonight and the next two days. So at ... read more

Having had little sleep (see previous post) I was not looking forward to today but it was the last long day and is meant to be a relatively easy walk. We had yoghurt and fruit for breakfast and left at 7.30 am, with about 1 1/2 hours walking in the dark. We walked for about an hour before a bar loomed in the distance and the warm reception at the door lured us in. It was a nice old stone building with loads of character so the stop revived us and set us up for the task ahead. The paths since Sarria have been very good and I imagine are well maintained due to the increased crowds on the Camino. We walked through pine forests, gum trees and oaks, so the scenery and scents along the ... read more

Hi all, unfortunately had to abandon the blog for the time being as there really isn't anywhere to write, and even if there had of been, it would have been impossible so it looks like it will be a post sailing write up instead! We arrived in La Coruna yesterday after a rough crossing. Initially we were planning to stop in France but wanted to get ahead of the weather so kept on going through the bay of biscay. My main focus has just been on trying to stay upright and brush my teeth twice a day-the crossing was rough and all but 3 crew have been as sick as a dog! It really was just the worst crossing, getting smashed every 30 seconds or so overnight-and it sounds so loud down in the Hull. Thankfully ... read more
