Hi all, unfortunately had to abandon the blog for the time being as there really isn't anywhere to write, and even if there had of been, it would have been impossible so it looks like it will be a post sailing write up instead! We arrived in La Coruna yesterday after a rough crossing. Initially we were planning to stop in France but wanted to get ahead of the weather so kept on going through the bay of biscay. My main focus has just been on trying to stay upright and brush my teeth twice a day-the crossing was rough and all but 3 crew have been as sick as a dog! It really was just the worst crossing, getting smashed every 30 seconds or so overnight-and it sounds so loud down in the Hull. Thankfully ... read more

La Coruna on the western coast of northern Spain 10 October 2014 After a very late start, we loaded our car at about 11.00am after talking to my Dad & Adam. The sun is not rising until 9.00am so it is pretty dark still at 8.00am - good sleeping conditions!!! Daylight saving in Europe doesn't end until late October and because this part of Spain is so far west, is the reason for the darkness. Portugal, which is just south from here, is on a different time zone - 1 hour difference. They are on the same time zone as London. Once again, we drove on fantastic Spanish roads, again, some of them new which cut our hilly, winding roads over the hills and mountains of this area of NW Spain. Often we were travelling 130kph ... read more

Galicia certainly hasn’t disappointed. I am a little in love with it.. Lovely people, great food at good prices. Barely anyone speaks English as it’s not really on the non-Spanish tourist trail. My schoolgirl Spanish has really helped, though sometimes with hilarious consequences! (More later on this..) I have also finally made it to Santiago De Compostela after reading several books about it – It didn’t disappoint. Things on board are definitely getting slick and second nature for the crew. We’re finding our sea legs. Alcohol consumption and cooking experimentation has increased three fold! Hair also getting bleached, so the grey hairs aren’t showing quite as much – though desperate to get my hair dyed once I work out how to say it in Portuguese?!? Oh, and did I mention the tan – coming on nicely ... read more

Thu 26th June –Falmouth Mike’s getting land sick – still no solenoid for the starter motor, but we decide on an afternoon sail from Falmouth Harbour around to Helford River. (Home of the famous Oysters & mussels). It’s quite breezy, gusting 4-5. Get overtaken by two French yachts having a race on the way out to sea, Mike most perturbed! It’s about 10nm into the river from the Marina. Very pleasant sail with the Pinders – despite Mike having to climb into the engine room to start the engine each time! Once we get into the mouth of the river, we have to keep tacking across the width of the river along with another three yachts doing the same. Probably the most close quarter sailing I’ve done, but quite fun! Helford River moorings seem quite popular ... read more

We have spent the last week exploring the Ria De Muros. The first two nights spent anchoring off the playa de San Francisco which was well sheltered and good holding. The town was small and friendly. We then moved to Muros anchoring outside the Marina, the town was bigger and busier, lots of history and cafes. They were celebrating a festival and the live music played until 5.30 am and at 9.00 am they sent up rocket air bombs from the pier !!! When do they sleep? It all got a bit too noisy and busy so we headed over to Portosin and have spent the last two nights on a berth there. A very nice place, very welcoming and friendly. Today we head for Baiona. I don't think we will have enough wind to get ... read more

At last !!!! Really hot day today, sunshine all day. Just a quick update to share some photos with you. Now Sam is on dry land and no longer feeling queasy she has found a new sport...... Splat the mosquito before it bites (never a dull moment). Fortunately for me they clearly fly past me to get to her. So far she has a bite on her chin, eyelid, forehead, end of nose, hands and arms. I havent even seen a mosquito yet. She is getting more swollen by the day, if she carries on like this I will only take her out on a lead with a bell round her neck. There is a picture of the local door knockers which appear to show a hand gripping a ball, Sam reckoned that this was an indication ... read more

Due to Sam writing her version of War and Peace I will keep my contribution mercifully short. We left Brest and had a fantastic first 24 hours doing 9 ½ to 10 knots and covered half the distance to Spain. The next 24 hours we did 50 miles, I was not happy, fortunately winds came back and in the next 24 hours we reached the coast of Northern Spain. Conditions made it difficult to sail to La Coruna, and in view of the look of mutiny coming from Sam I decided to head for the nearest point of land. Sunday evening we arrived at Ria de Ribadeo, this had been described as a pleasant well sheltered anchorage……It was neither! The next morning we eventually set off again for La Coruna, the wind wasn’t as good as ... read more

We are still in A Coruna (LaCoruna), Spain along with quite a few other boats waiting for the north winds and the large seas to die down. The last couple of days we have had sunny weather which is a nice change from the grey skies and cold wind we’ve been experiencing the last few weeks. Things are looking up (the glass is half full). Thankfully there is plenty to keep us occupied while we wait for better weather. It seems that the days have been slipping by and we have been either working on the boat or exploring the area some more. We were told by a few folks that the nearby Military Museum was very well done so we checked it out. The displays are well laid out and they cover Spanish history from ... read more

We made it to La Coruna (Spanish spelling) on June 6th after a fairly nice sail from Camarinas. We were pleasantly surprised sailing up the coast to get a call on the VHF from Gazelle. They had left a day before us going directly to the Isle of Wight and we hadn’t expected to run into them again. They had stopped for the night due to rough seas and were going to A Coruna as well. We also found that a German that we had met in Camarinas was still here waiting for the weather to head back to Hamburg. We really lucked out, he is giving up cruising so gave us his folding bicycle – we now are a 2 bicycle family again. We are finding that Europe is much more bicycle friendly and bike ... read more

I haven't done any updates for a while now, so there is quite a lot to say. I've conquered O Cebreiro, the last big mountain on the route, and by accident (sort of), I overtook another mountain when there was a pass-by route. It was nice too though. I had plans of going on a nightly tour just the other day, but the tube got punctured once again, so I thought it was a good idea to stay the night at an albergue as usual. I haven't had to step off many times, only during the toughest ascents, which get fewer and fewer for every 10km by now. In total, there are not very many kilometers left. Less than 40, which I will probably split in two days. Today, until now, I've done maybe 30 kilometers, ... read more
