Geo: 39.4891, -6.41298On our last full day in Aranjuez (Tuesday) we stayed close to 'home', had coffee and Jaffa cakes over a natter with Dorothy and Eric during the morning. Then, after lunch we walked from the site through some of the formal gardens of the Palacio Real which must have been very grand in their heyday. In the intense heat of the day, the trees provided some welcome shade. We chose not to go round the interior of the Palace for which there is an entrance fee, but from outside it looks very grand, although it is free of charge to wander the extensive grounds and confines as we did. Not that that swayed our decision, you understand!Back at the 'van, another invite to join Dorothy and Eric this time for a glass of wine and ... read more

I woke up this morning ready to see Merida. I was really looking forward to seeing Merida because it is filled with Roman ruins. Merida used to be the capitol of the Roman region that is currently Spain. Not only does Merida have a lot of Roman sights, but a lot of it is still in great shape. I wasn’t quite sure what kind of ruins were here, but I found a map and went off on my way. The map ended being a tad off, so I followed the signs that led to the Roman theatre and amphitheater. I looked at the information for buying tickets and saw that I could get in to several things for the student ticket of 6 dollars. I started off going into the theatre and amphitheater. Since I never ... read more

I got up early this morning so I could eat free breakfast, check out, take the metro, and make it to my bus. The bus time ended up being earlier than I thought, and the metro took longer than I thought. Of course the metro doesn’t make it too easy for someone carrying a heavy suitcase, so I ended up dragging my suitcase down a lot of stairs and up. One of the times, a guy helped me carry it up the stairs. I ended up rushing because I was worried I was going to be late, but luckily made it to my bus. It took about 4-5 hours to get from Lisbon to Merida. I was really sad to leave Portugal behind, but I am happy to be back in Spain. I'm not in my ... read more

One of the best experiences of my trip was meeting David and getting the chance to spend a few weeks together in Salamanca. He is a dreamer if ever I met one and once he finished his photography project in Morocco, he hitch-hiked his way across Spain to be with me. We spent our days talking politics (mainly Spain and the US), the suffering in the world and its imbalances, and all the ways we want to help others. We also had the chance to do some traveling together-car camping in what is now one of my favorite regions-Extramadura (a gorgeous area of small pueblos practically untouched by tourism and modernity). David challenged me in so many important ways and I feel renewed in the challenge to be a better person, to live a better life. ... read more

It was hairdryer hot. The temperature displays in Seville showed a giddying 41C and my bike thermo more or less agreed registering 40C. I opened my jacket but the effect of the hot air hitting my chest actually made me hotter, so I zipped it up again. It was overcast but the air temperature here was actually hotter than the Sahara, which was typically mid-thirties – the killer there being the effect of being in the sun which probably pushed the effective in-the-sun temperature north of 50C. Seville looked a pleasant enough city and there were some beautiful buildings around, but if it was this hot I doubted I would ever make a trip here. I reasoned that whoever programmed the navigation engine of the Garmin had to be female. The only thing predictable about it ... read more

Well I got here,……Here being Plasencia. Am currently sitting on the terrazza of the hotel and waiting for the restaurant to open. Before 21.00 hours forget it. Good that I got a good lunch. Will have to change my routine a bit ! The weather is very pleasant and not a cloud in the sky and still about 25 degrees if not more. The hotel is a little bit outside Plasencia so I doubt if I shall go out tonight after a good meal and a beer or two. The day started out with a quick blast up the back roads and leaving the motorway to my right. This road was featured on " Good Biking Roads " website and it was full of bikers in both directions. The road starts at San juan del puerto ... read more

BLOG 4 Tuesday 8 May – Halleluiah, we have sun!! We left you last time earlier today, in overcast skies, at a McDonalds in Caceres trying to Skype Tom (with no luck). Whilst one of us dealt with computer matters the other did a big shop at Carrfour (bless him!) We then drove for just under an hour, along a mostly motorway road with reasonable but very flat landscape to Trujillo. Once again you could see it in the distance – a magnificent walled castle town atop a big hill. This time it REALLY lived up to expectations – the best place we’ve been to so far.....AND by the time we got there the sun was well and Trujillo out – his vest and both coats were abandoned and having parked up near the town, we ... read more

Wednesday 2 May – Last night we were freecamped by the river and Roman bridge at Alcantara. Today we drove back up into town for a look-see. Weather overcast and chilly – fairly interesting town, pretty much deserted. Had a coffee in the square and moved on. An hour or so’s drive to Valencia de Alcantara through varied countryside – flat & barren, green & rolling, hilly & rocky. We stopped half way on a farm track for lunch and a siesta and arrived In Valencia de Alcantara late afternoon – freecamping next to the bullring. Thursday 3 May – The town is very pleasant and busy. Groups of old men sitting in the square, women gossiping on street corners. Our Spanish successfully tracked down and purchased a Mother’s Day card for Oz before a walk ... read more

Hello again.......... Wednesday 25 April – From our campsite just out of Salmanca, we were going to cycle the 6km river path into the city today but...........too damn cold and windy (at least no rain). So instead we drove in, managing to find fairly close parking. What a bloomin’ difference the weather makes.........our memories of Salamanca was bustle, life and fabulous streets and buildings. The buildings of course were still as great but the impetus to walk around them in gale force winds, plus the lack of life on the streets – nothing out on the pavements etc – made it a less enjoyable visit than last time. We treated ourselves to a delicious typically Spanish 3 course lunch in a charming restaurant, including bread and a BOTTLE of red wine.....for 12 euros each! Amazing value ... read more
