Today was awesome. Lindsay and I had a typical Spanish Breakfast (AKA. - a very small breakfast. We had cereal, but in a cup instead of a bowl. Maria took us on the bus and showed us how to use it. I met so many new people at orientation! I made some really nice friends. They served coffee during the program, the best coffee I have ever tasted in my entire life!!! Cafe con leche es perfecto. We burn our coffee in the U.S., especially Starbucks. I didn't know how coffee should tast like until I came here. We went out to this Spanish Restaurant near the school and next door to El Estadio Santiago Bernebeu, the soccer team Real Madrid's stadium. The food was great. Had paella and such. Got some stuff at the pharmacy ... read more

Even though the plane was late, the NYU people were still there, thank god! So I met up with them, and they watched my bags while I exchanged my travelers checks into Euros. We then left on a bus with other students to downtown Madrid where I took a taxi to my apartment. I yelled up to my suitemates who were already there, and they helped me with my stuff. So yeah my suitemates are Yelena and Howard. They are both in Stern and basically cool people. We chose rooms and then went to talk to the landlady. Her name is Conchita. She is a sweet older lady with 7 children, but speaks no english. Thankfully Howard speaks decent spanish, so it wasn't that bad. We gave our first months rent and I got my keys. ... read more

I made it to Spain. It's amazing. I met some NYU kids at the airport and we chilled there for a bit. Met my host family. They're great. Don't speak any english, so a bit of a communication gap. HAHA. My friend and house mate Lindsay and I ventured on the metro today. It's so clean beautiful, NOTHING LIKE NY! We went to Sol, which is where some main landmarks lie. We also got lost in the artsy, soho-ish Goya neighborhood. We went to a tapas bar where I had tostada camarones con ali oli. (Toast with melted cheese and olive oil topped with shrimp. It was amazing!!! Lindsay and I talked to the bartender who was very friendly. This city is beautiful and Europe is definitely different. Especially when it is your new home.... read more

Wow, what can I say about this night! It was absolutely crazy! My friend Eoin flew down from Dublin a few days before to celebrate ¨La Noche Vieja¨with me. We headed to my friend Ed´s house first for some yummy food and then headed down to Puerta del Sol (the city center) for the midnight count down. Actually, they don´t do a count down in Spain. At midnight there are a bunch of fireworks and the church bells toll 12 times. Everyone eats 12 grapes and drinks cider. If you eat the grapes you are meant to have 12 months of prosperity for the year to come. Happy New Year in Spanish is ¨Feliz Año Nuevo¨. Eoin took every chance he could get to say this to the pretty shop clerks and of course it was ... read more

Including her adventures... Getting acquainted with the city Eating pizza from a cone Hanging out with famous sportsmen during a Nike commercial shoot Taking a walking tour of Medieval Madrid Visiting the Prado Museum Watching old book printing techniques Marvelling at the Royal Palace Wandering through the streets of Toledo & hanging out with some new friends at Bull's Hostel ...among others After a fairly short plane ride, I was again in a country where I could understand (much of!) the language, ready to test out my skills after 2 years of university Spanish. It started off well, and I managed to buy a weekly pass for the Madrid transport network and find my way to Bull's Hostel, even getting some compliments on my language skills along the way! After checking in, I decided to go ... read more

Madrid - December 17th to 20th, 2005 December may not be the best time of the year for those wishing to escape the London cold as the city is only a degree or two warmer than the British capital this time of the year. However, for those wishing for a quick, action packed weekend (and a couple of more days!), Madrid is great for a change of scene if nothing else. A two hour flight from London Heathrow gets you into the Spanish capital of Madrid. Barajas is a busy airport - especially on a Saturday morning - surely we are not the only ones who have had the brilliant idea of an extended weekend holiday, just to bring in Christmas! Signs of 'Navidad' (Christmas) are everywhere - posters on the Metro, Christmas trees on every ... read more

Hello folks! Its been a while since I’ve updated my travel blog. Thought I’d give you the latest on my life here in Madrid. I’ve been living here since I arrived in October after a month of traveling. I did a teaching English as a foreign language certification course the first month I was here. I quickly picked up several jobs teaching English with three academies. Here in Madrid, teaching English usually means giving private lessons at someone’s house or at a company. I teach five students at their houses and I also teach three students at the Spanish military aircraft manufacturer. The work is interesting and allows be to be creative since I develop all my own lesson plans. The downfall is that I have to travel all over the city and spend an equal ... read more

Place: Sierra de Gredos Gredos is an unspoilt region, known by only a few visitors. I have had the hardest time making any time for emails, phone calls and least of all the blog!! Things are running quite smoothly over here on the Iberian Peninsula. So far I found the routine that suits me with a few adjustments here and there, but for the most part its teaching, then more teaching...and when I have some free time its planning for teaching. I am definitely keeping busy. The holidays are coming up very soon, and I am planning on going home. A trip to Cali isnt going to be possible though...tear..at least not right now. Last week, my brother, Ken and his girlfriend Jen( Kennifer) were my very first vistiors here in Madrid! We had so much fun! We laughed so much, I swear Alejandro peed his pants....i know he did. ;) ... read more

Update: I stayed in Madrid for the 5 day weekend since it would be my last couple of days with the senora and I was getting ready to move. $900/month for the homestay would get pricey after awhile so I am now in an apartment paying $440/month and cooking by myself (what adventures cooking with different ingredients!). The apartment is nice and clean and I pretty much get it to myself up until 7 pm. I live with 2 other people, a 24 year old Italian who only knows Spanish because his dad worked in South America and he grew up there, and a 45 year old Ecuadorian woman. Both are workers and together it's a 2 bedroom, 1 bathroom apartment with a kitchen and living room. I have my own room and it's sunny rather ... read more
