Getaria Spain
Small ancient seaside town Traveling down from San Sebastián trying to see more of the country than just the coastal route. Through the Basque countryside and then onto Getaria, a little seas side town where old Spanish ships sailed from, quite an ancient town.
We zigzagged down the coast to Llanes, a picturesque little fishing seaside town, everybody all so friendly. Chocolate was a big thing there, chocolate to drink and to eat, very tempting so we didn't stay there long, chocolate town was too sinful. At Á Garuda a small fishing town we found a small Pensiona. and were really spoiled by our Spanish mum she was just lovely. and also the local restaurant who also looked after us very well. We ate very traditional foods from the sea, sardines anchovies cuttlefish. The owners made us a fantastic seafood Paella it was just delicious, but we could have fed a family of six. We left with a doggy bag, lunch for the next day.Our Spanish mother told us about the local attractions and about a medieval town which lay on the top of a hillside. We climbed to the top and saw a astonishing round ruins of an old settlement and a spectacular view of
Portugal only for a short while as the sea mist came down and we saw nothing. Each morning we awoke to caffe latte and fresh Madeira cake, fresh orange juice and lots of fussing about after us. She was a real sweetheart our Spanish mum. We have found in our travels we meet some lovely people but some people who you meet or just visit just shine, they have a warmth about them and you instantly feel comfortable with them. And they too no matter how foreign you are to them they feel the same. With my limited Italian my Spanish is very not very good. But we muddle through and are guided when people help us with our lingo. We spent the next four days in Portugal from Porto to Lisbon and down to the Algarve both large city's were very interesting. The small town of Tivera on the Algarve Coast was very hot dry heat, can't say that we enjoyed Portugal that much, but the weather was just lovely hot and dry. Back into Spain, back up through the mountains and country which was abundant with olive groves, grapes and fields full of sun flowers, villages each with the old
historic parts to them, some with castles and fortified walls. With the new towns alongside them. Mérida was our next stop and is known for the fact that it was the largest Roman settlement outside of Italy boasting some fantastic buildings and bridges. We stayed in a fantastic apartment here and explored the old ruins and the tiny streets of the old town. The museum was fantastic and the contents were incredible with the objects the they had dug up, some wonderful mosaics. I have never seen mosaics so large and in such perfect condition. On to Madrid, we love Madrid and it's lovely fountains and builds just beautiful. Each church holds a secret beauty, they look so plain outside but once you walk through the doors you see elaborate gold alters, and ceilings that are guilded with silver and golds and angelic paintings.Tapas bars and restaurants in every alley and small streets with exteriors that are tiled with ornate picture tiles. Buildings with wooden shutters which are closed mid afternoon so as to cool the homes for siestas. Siestas which are great, where everyone has a nap. Everything closes as the same all over Europe as the summer heat
is so hot and dry so
from 3pm to 5pm people rest and businesses close and reopen
from 5 till 10 pm. Spanish people are loud and vivacious, their in your face and happy, and alway willing to help you.We enjoyed a night at Flamenco dancing well at least one of us did Glen was missing the soccer and the Grand Prix but happy wife happy life.Bull fighting was on our list but I was a little naive as I thought they no longer killed the bulls, sounds strange I know but I thought these days they acted out the slaughter of the bull. But no they actually still kill the Bulls, so it meant sitting through 3 killings in one hour so we passed. But we are sorry to leave Spain today we have truly enjoyed our time. And would not hesitate to come back and explore more....... especially the North. Back to France and the Riviera, Monti Carlo here we come........and to you all my love and chat later.
