We left Barcelona Sunday and got into Madrid around 4. We flew Ryanair again, but it was much more organized and I liked the Madrid airport much more than Girona. Our hostel in Madrid was harder to find but it was very clean and there was a bathroom in the room. There was also free internet like in Barcelona. Again breakfast was included, but not really. There was a Starbucks directly next to our hostel so we just ate there for breakfast. Madrid was very similar to Barcelona, but not as crazy. We met up with one of my roommate's friends who was studying in Madrid so he led us around the city and to all of the important places.
The first night we were there we just found this place to eat dinner. I had Spanish meatballs and they were so good, I normally don't like meatballs. They just served about 5 of them on top of french fries in some sort of sauce. I had sangria that night too, but it was much better than Barcelona. We walked through one of the biggest plazas in Madrid where one of the most famous restaurants is located, supposedly where
Ernest Hemingway frequented.
The next day we went to Palacio Real De Madrid which was an enormous palace which is still used for meetings and such today. We were only able to see a small portion of the place. There was a little balcony to see a great view though. The dining room was probably the most extravagant rooms in the palace. It had a table to sit about 100 at least. After that we went to the Royal Botanic Gardens which would have been prettier had the flowers been in bloom. It was still a nice day to walk around and enjoy the day.
Then we went to another part of the park where people could rent boats and just paddle in this pond. After that we went to the Reina Sofia museum since it was free from 5-7pm for students. We were all so tired so we just made a straight walk to see Picasso's Guernica and then left. I was glad we got to do that, but I want to go back to see more of the paintings and artwork. We got lost along the way trying to find the Reina Sofia and these
old Spanish ladies stopped us and asked us if we were lost and then tried explaining where it was for about 30 minutes. We ate lunch at this place called Nebraska, apparently a lot of places in Spain have to do with Nebraska. I just had a club sandwich and it was just ok.
We ate dinner at this other paella place and I just had a vegetable paella. We didn't go out at night, we were so tired and wanted to be awake for the flight back to Florence. I wish we would have spent the whole break in Spain, halloween is much bigger in Barcelona and I think it would have been fun to spend it away. One of my roommates and I might go to Milan on thursday though and one of my friends from high school is visiting this weekend so it will still be fun, we might climb the Duomo this week too. Also, we are going to Paris in 3 weeks!
