After getting the invite to stay at my sisters place in Llorrette De Mar, we went straight there, the thought of a proper bed was too much to delay. We took the ferry from port de torres to BARCELONA, a 13 hour journey, never to be done again. It was full of teenage children and we were tortured by some god awful music which was blasted out of the loud speaker, we were unable to move to another deck as Charlie had to stay on that level.
We thought we were in the lap of luxury. However, we had to go to a scousers pub, called El Pub, those scousers sure know how to be original, to collect the keys. In between collecting the keys, and having a few pints, which took about 4 hours, we returned (or stumbled) to the van in the car park, only to discover we had been broken into. How they got in is a mystery, but they seemed to have looked through my wardrobe, and found nothing they liked ( a great surprise and insult), and vamoosed without taking anything, so no big deal. The next 4 days was spent in El
Pub, the beach, and the flat. A good 4 days. Forgot to mention that due to Fiona having her wits about her, she had taken all of our valuables to the pub in her granny's trolley.
Next it was on to Jaca, in the Pyrenese, a lovely old town with lots of character. From there we headed for The Quaint old spa town of Salies De Bearn. We stopped in the Aire, car park, where we were shocked to find that the local police collected the money for staying overnight. It was a nice touristy town, but the prices reflected that. We were happy to pay the policeman 6 euro for police protection, slept well that night.
Another day and another move, this time to St Jean De lux, which was a really nice surfers camp site, full of young people. We gate crashed a birthday party, which was going on in the bar, but didn’t get any of the free drink that was going round.
Next was another car park at Cap Breton, which had a really nice beach, but seemed to have some oil residue all over it which
turned our feet black. We stayed here 2 nights on account of a thunderstorm on the second day and night. This was another surfers place, full of youngsters.
Our next move was to Vieux Boicqu Les Baines. This seemed like a purpose built holiday village, all new and expensive. It was quite entertaining, but I was miffed when I bought 2 pieces of cod for the extortionate price of 19 Euro.
Onwards to the highlight of the South west coast, Dune De Pylat, the biggest sand dune in Europe. We trekked up and ran down twice in 2 days and glad to stay another night to recover. The campsite was really good, right next to the beach, but a really steep climb to get back up.
After the dune we headed for the Aire, car park, in Port Hourtin. Lo and behold another Triathlon. We stayed 3 nights. On the first day there was an Iron man event, Le Frenchman, on the second day there was an ordinary triathlon, and the 3
rd day there were kiddies triathlons. In between we kept ourselves amused in a little local bar, which was cheap
and the locals were very entertaining. However, I planned to watch the England v France Toulon U21 tournament final. We marched all the way to the bar, it was closed, and we marched all the way back again. What a disaster.
We are fairly near the north coast now, and it feels like time to come home. Money is getting a bit tight, the strikes are affecting getting diesel at the pumps, so we are playing it by ear, but it looks we will be home a bit earlier than we thought.
We have decided that next year our travels will take us to Greece.
One major hic -cup on our travels is the fridge packed up on Sardinia, so we have had no cold beer except the ones first bought from the supermarket, and that was always a quick jog back to the camper before it got too warm.
The gas for the cooking played up and it took us 3 days to sort the problem. Three days without the morning cuppa, not good.
Charlie has been great but has restricted us from doing
stuff together. But it has been lovely having him with us.
