Sant Joan
On the way back from the beach Sunday 22 June 2008 My god it's hot!! Had to put the A/C on today because it was just too much to handle. Not even a little breeze. Alex still played footie though while I did my exercise videos in the comfort of the air conditioned flat.
Monday 23 June 2008 We ate a mediocre dinner of tostas which turned out to be a piece of bread (albeit very nice bread) with some stuff on top. Kind of like an open sandwich, and I ordered some patatas fritas and got a bowl of crisps!
Celebrations for Sant Joan down the beach - it was insane! Alex, Kyles and I originally planned to meet Tasha on Verdaguer platform, but changed it last minute to meet outside Ciutadella metro station. Which was probably the best idea in the universe, considering the amount of people trying to get on the train! Managed to jump on the train that just pulled into the station, which was full of tourists. Madness. Once we got to Ciutadella, we waited outside for the others and were regaled with stories of Drew's heroic efforts to stop a thief on the train. We walked down to the beach, passing
Calella
It got a bit cloudy so we left an insane number of kids throwing bangers and setting off fireworks. Very dangerous. Ended up finding a space by the bar playing reggae and cotched there for the night. Ruth had made some brownies and potato salad, both of which were yummy.
Tuesday 24 June 2008 Sant Joan is today so everything's closed! Although we did go out for dinner to the Japanese buffet down the road. Absolutely stuffed!!!
Wednesday 25 June 2008 I've been trying to set Kyles up with one of my students, as he's got his own flat, a nice car, and a good job. I was meant to ask him if he surfs (the only reason Kyles would be interested), but I totally forgot. CRAP! And now Kyles is leaving so it won't work out. I was so looking forward to the wedding and all...
Kyles got fired from the hostel today, haha! She came round with her stuff and stayed the night on the oh-so-comfortable-looking table-bed.
Thursday 26 June 2008 Big football match on tonight so my evening class finished 30 minutes early! Can't complain really, at least I'm getting paid for it...! Was going to head to Paula and Ali's for
dinner, but ended up eating late at home, which turned out to be a good thing as apparently the pasta wasn't very nice...
Friday 27 June 2008 Decided to go to Calella today on the recommendation of one of my students. It's just over an hour away on the train, and meant to be nice so went with Alex and Kyles for the afternoon. The whole coast up was beautiful! The stop before was Sant Pol de Mar, which is where Tasha said was really nice, and it looked amazing. But we trekked on to Calella as planned. The sand wasn't fine at all - more like grit - which hurt a little to walk on, but at least it didn't get everywhere like fine sand does, which I think we all appreciated. The water was so clear and calm as well, so had a nice swim out to sea. There was even a tent playing some Spanish music to entertain us. Much eating of crisps and biscuits and discussions of going to Thailand in September took place. The sun disappeared behind some clouds in the evening so a lot of people started to leave and I decided it
Susanna
Birthday girl was our time too - especially if we were having dinner at Paula's later. As we walked past the tent playing music earlier, they started to blast out Killing In The Name (Rage), but cut it off as we got to the front. Turned out there's a 3 day salsa festival here, which we would've been tempted to check it out had it not been EUR 140!!!!!
Once we got back, Kyles and I had showers and headed out to Paula's for dinner, leaving Alex behind - who, surprisingly, wasn't sunburned!! She'd made a curry, which turned out to be OK, and even had chocolate cake for dessert! It was actually Ali's birthday cake, as it was his birthday on Tuesday. The flat was quite nice - cute and cosy, although you could hear everything people did in the toilet. Kyles stayed the night there and I walked home through some nice plazas.
Saturday 28 June 2008 Kyles' last day today :-( so we had a picnic in Ciutadella park. Had to go to Mercadona and buy some stuff for it, but ended up getting there around 14:30 with baguettes, crisps, pitta bread with houmous, and grapes. Yum! Although
Some church
The building I tried to enter but it was locked there were loads of big ants trying to take food back to their queen or whatever it is big ants do with the food.
We parked in some shade near a gazebo where some Spaniards were singing and dancing flamenco, so we were entertained for a while. After they finished a young dude started entertaining us with some tap dancing. He was pretty good.
Paula and Thing (Ali's new name) were meant to join us but they fell asleep so it was just us 3 for most of the afternoon. But towards the end Magnus and Sam from Kyles' hostel joined us for some hacky.
As we went back to the flat, we met Paula and Thing who came up to our flat to see Kyles before she left. Cotched for a bit before Kyles got ready to leave and fly to England... :-( Alex is sad.
I tried to cheer myself up by finding a replacement with a really nice lady called Susanna, who invited me to her birthday party at her flat down the road. So I left without Alex and met lots of Spanish people, and bumped into Bill (aka Howard) - Tasha's mate who I met once before at a poker game! Small world...
Ended up getting to bed around 7am, sweating my arse off from the rum/115-step-climb combo!
