First things first, finally it snowed in London. We thought it wasn’t going to happen but out of nowhere it got exceedingly cold and let it snow, let it snow, let it snow!
Anyway, back to the reason why we are here, Barcelona.
Work were kind enough to give me 4 days in a row and I decided that I was not going to sit about in London or spend my weekend somewhere cold in England (I found out that it snowed again and 10 times better than the other week!).
Shaun, Krystel and I made the voyage to Spain on Friday afternoon and before we knew it we were in a bar drinking Sangria. Once our bags were in the room we had a wander around the town and made our way up La Rambla, the main street in Barcelona and after being pestered every two steps by guys trying to sell us cerveza we made our way into the old town and found a bit of a festive song and dance going on beneath the steps of a cathedral. We finally succumbed to street beer and had a bit of a jig ourselves.
Once the
crowd had dispersed we made our way back to our area found a cool local joint, ordered a jug of sangria and took in the local kids and all their football chants.
After only a few hours Spain was looking great.
Saturday saw us head to the marina for a quick look around and then up to the local market and sample some local goods before heading to Parc Guell for a picnic. The market was awesome, full of fantastic colours, fishy smells and bustling with people. For lunch I decided to try queso monchego, a local cheese that I believe is made of sheep milk, some salami, fresh bread and cherry tomatoes. We caught the metro to the park and ascended the escalator, that’s right, up to the park.
Parc Guell had great views of the city and we perched ourselves below a giant crucifix on the top of a hill to eat all the fresh produce. After lunch we wandered through the park and got a taste of some of Antoni Gaudi’s spectacular architecture at a giant mosaic park bench and two gingerbread looking houses.
Our next port of call was to La Pedrera to
Market
Fresh seafood, great market, great food. check out more of Gaudi’s work. His make over to the building, like all his work, is very captivating. He uses lots of curves and natural shapes in his buildings. On the roof top terrace are fantastic sculptures of all sorts of different shapes and sizes. After a chill out on the roof and we made our way visit roman ruins under the city. Next siesta, Shaun kipped for 3 hours while Krystel and I got stuck into 3 litres of Sangria.
Dinner time finally rolled around at 9 so we headed out for more Tapas, can’t remember too much of the meal as the sangria was in full force, we later headed out to a small bar with Shaun’s sister’s boyfriend’s brother (funny) and I was pretty much gone.
Sunday was Krystel’s last day with us so we did some more sight seeing. We headed for the beach in the morning; water was freezing so no one went in past their ankles.
From there we headed on a mission of a walk to Sagrada Famalia, a massive cathedral designed by Gaudi. This is one of the most impressive, if not the most impressive, church I have ever
Parc Guell
A villa in Parc Guell seen. Unfortunately I forgot my camera so no photos.
With sore feet we made our way to the tube and headed back to town and drop Krystel off at the bus. Shaun and I spent the rest of the day napping, eating and watching the soccer, Barcelona was playing.
Monday Shaun and I headed back to the market and indulged in tapas for brekkie and then headed up the hill to the 1992 Olympic site and the castle on the hill. The views over the city were fantastic and a great way to finish our time in Barcelona. After a stroll back into town we met Adam out for drinks and more tapas.
Tuesday we headed up to Girona for the afternoon, what a beautiful old city it was. We hung out in the old town for most the day and walked the length of the old town wall stopping to take photos from every angle possible. It was the perfect way to end the trip to Spain and enjoy the 23-degree day, mmmm.
