The donkey waits patiently behind the Albergue
Probably because of the rain the family of the lady from Belgium with the 3 boys, donkey and dog, stayed inside in the Albergue. 15 September 2015, Tuesday: Stage 21 El Burgo Ranero to Mansilla de las Mulas
GPS 11.65 miles walking for 3 hours 43 minutes and left at 0816 arrived at 1345 or 5 hours and 30 minutes enroute.
Fitbit: 11.64 miles, steps 26,656, stairs 18
Today was all walking along a path beside a road. Cool and cloudy day with not much variation in the farm fields as we walked along. Trees have been planted along the trail and in a few years will provide the shade that I am sure is so desired by pilgrims in the summer. The first stop was a rest area but the first coffee break was more than 8 miles into the day at Reliegos where we had coffee and tortilla - the spanish potato and egg omelet. Of note was our getting acquainted with two people we had paella with last night, George from Florida and Daniel from Milano, Italy. George is a retired USAF fighter pilot who was given a medical discharge after 15 years due to colon cancer and had to have it removed. He is 75 years old and has never walked before. He traveled in Spain last year
and was inspired by his visit to Santiago. He has a friend who is was a priest but left the church and married. So he is walking for his friend whose wife has alzheimers and so he cannot make the walk now.
Daniel is fluent in Chinese. His English is very good also. Last night he helped our host, Manuel explain, in Italian to other pilgrims, the history of his and his significant other, Svetlana, and their efforts to serve good paella to pilgrims. Daniel has studied and worked in Shanghai and will be the point person at the
university in Milan for Chinese students studying in Milan. He is a very handsome young man who was trying to catch the eye of two very attractive New Zealand girls ahead of us on the trail who also had paella dinner last night. So he does not walk with us very long.
So the day started off with a few sprinkles but then only windy until the last hour when it started to rain more seriously. We arrived at Albergueria del Camino in Mansilla de las Mulas and had a glass of the white wine for Jo Finestead. It
is Vino Blanco, Verdejo Rueda, by Vera Mar. There are only four rooms in this family run little albergue. The upstairs sitting area is very lovely with library and old solid wood furnishings. We can see why this was one of Jo's favorite spots on the Camino. The proprietor states that his life is dedicated to those traveling along the camino.
Dinner is served in a most lovely dining room and it is delicious. We then retreat to our cozy room while the showers continue outside. One looks out of our window onto a grape arbor. One could almost open the window and help themselves to a cluster of grapes.
Weather today as mentioned was cool wet and windy. Temperature around 50 degrees all day with wind gusts up to 22 mph.
