September 27/2015 Finally getting up to date as WiFi can be spotty. Today was a much more pleasant walk as much of the trip was away fr the highway. The little towns are similar to each other but unique in ways. A little town Called El Ganso has this unique Cowboys Bar along with a cure older church. A great day which was short enough to get organized for a few days ahead. Tomorrow we make a. Big climb. ... read more

27 September 2015, Sunday. Stage 23, Leon to Villar de Mazarife (we are now two stages behind Brierley who is at 21) GPS: 13.72 miles, 4hours 55 minutes moving and 6 hours and 45 minutes from start at Hotel Luis Leon to Albergue San Antonio de Padua end of walking day. Fitbit: 13.41 miles, steps 30,689, stairs 52. Breakfast is not until 0800 on weekend at the hotel so we do not plan on an early start. It is further delayed by our trying to get blog on Barcelona out. We agree to disagree. see early posts. Yesterday we had scoped out the most direct route to Plaza San Marcos and the Parador. It is about a mile from our hotel. The 10 am morning is cool and refreshing as we walk through the nearly deserted ... read more

Woke up early after a wonderful night sleep at the spa hotel. So far the best beds yet. On the road at 8 am. There are a lot of cyclist heading out. Most we've seen yet. One of the big groups, a fully supported ride. They just hop on their bikes and ride to the next destination. All accommodation and food are taken care of. They were impressed with our mileage and the fact we are carrying our own gear. Mike and I both agree we like our system. Heading out of town we begin to climb. Today is our first big climb. Over the next 15 miles we climbed to 5000 feet elevation. It was grueling and the flies were relentless. I had to listen to my iPod to stop from going crazy from them ... read more

Woke up at 7, packed our bags and headed downstairs to the hotel buffet breakfast. While eating breakfast Dominick entered the room. He had stayed at the same hotel as us and we didn't even know it. I said the camino has brought us together. We are enjoying his company and conversation. On the road at 9 am. It was warm enough we did not need our coats. Spent the first hour traveling out of Leon. Rode the side walk and street. When we got to the trail it followed the road again so opted to ride the road most the day. We were still able to travel through the small towns. I had a rough day. Had to stop and shake it off. Mike felt a little bad I think. When were were discussing places ... read more

Today was the beginning of the Camino and although very anxious about what awaited me it was a great day walking through the countryside. My transfer to Hospital de Orbigo was almost an hour late making me uneasy and thinking that something was wrong, but when I called them it was all good "ah si si, we come, it's Sunday!" No rush on Sundays, or any other day I think which can be refreshing at times. Anyway after getting dropped off at my starting point the driver bid me "Buen Camino" (a good luck gesture said by many along the way) and I hit the cobblestone in 9 degrees, brrrrrr. As I warmed up so did the day and within a few hours I was walking and talking with others. There are a lot of German's ... read more

Well I was going to tell you about yesterday but between mass, dinner and too much vino and too much walking equals one tiredLinda - time for bed! I will tell you more about yesterday and about mass this evening - God willing and the internet works tomorrow. It ended up being a good day - not as good as yesterday but still a good day. Mass was interesting too - small chapel in a convent - nuns in the back behind bars. Like real Sound of Music nuns. And one of the floor to ceiling panels on the side sported Mary being crucified. Things that make you go hmmm! So Dias te bendiga to all and to all a good night! Linda... read more

The wi-fi didn't work at the parochial albergue I stayed at last night, so I will have to go back to that story as it is worth telling. But on to today. I made it to Astorga by noon. I would have arrived earlier but I stopped on the hill above town to enjoy the beautiful view of Astorga and the valley below me! As you crested the hill there is a cross there and a man was playing the pellegrino song (want donations of course). I stayed a while and listened to him as he would start playing again everytime some pilgrims came up the hill. I also changed shows there - first time to walk in sandals. I walked into town with them 4-5k. While there a man drove up. He cares for the ... read more

Hello All, Well we are just outside of Astorga, Spain in a town called Santibanez de Valdeiglesia. Yesterday we stayed in a little town called Villarreal de Mazarife. The hospilario (host) is a physical therapist / Shaman. I was not sure exactly what that was but a friend I am traveling with has a bum knee and needed assistance. He came and rubbed it and said some voodoo shit and then put some hemp hair and egg on his knee and he was cured. Personally I think he was smoking the rest of the hemp plant but my friend said it worked and it was his knee so who am I to argue. They were very nice and we had a nice time. The food was great and at the break of dawn off we were. ... read more

Actually I´m in Hospital de Orbigo (about 15 Kms from Astorga) but it´s not on the list so that will do... Ok, so today I´m going to break another oath I made to you. I promised not to write rhapsodical praise of aspects of the trip, and that´s just what I´m going to do. I´m so bad. Last night in Leon, I had the privilege of eating some of the best food I´ve ever had the fortune to encounter. A few pilgrims had arranged to meet outside the cathedral in Leon to go to dinner. We had a couple of glasses of wine (welcome back old friend), and some people weren´t keen on eating, some wandered off to grab a quick sandwich and the usual ´I don´t know what I feel like´issues arose. In the end ... read more
