June 28, 2008 Santander, Spain A few hours on the road through S.W. France and into northern Spain and we arrived at Santander, Spain on the North coast of Spain on the Atlantic Ocean. Another nice drive on good roads and a great variety of scenery from farmland to mountain passes. Santander is a very nice resort area with a huge, very nice, beach and at this time of year it is getting busy as expected. We took a short walk to the beach and stopped at the local Casino to donate a few euros to the local economy. This is a great place for kids with lots of the usual beach things to do and see. The last part of the drive follows the coast with some very nice seascapes. We didn’t see the coast ... read more

I went to a city called Santander last weekend, with my English friend Emma. I have to say it was one of the most fun times I've had since I've been here. On Friday, I said to Emma, 'Do you want to do a spontaneous trip this weekend? No plans, let's just show up at the bus station, choose a destination & figure it out from there.' She said, 'all right.' So, that's basically what we did! I've always wanted to do something like that. We kind of had an idea that we wanted to see Santander. It's a city on the Northern coast of Spain & is right on the ocean. They have famous beaches & the ferry that goes between Spain & the UK departs from there. It was the best! We caught the ... read more

This is an owesome destination which surely deserved more than just two days! Unfortunately this trip is coming to an end soon... There's no much time left before I take a ferry back to Dover. However, I still want to see quite a few places as I rush back to Calais! Picos is absolutely gorgeous, with narrow winding roads through snow capped mountains, thousands of trekking routes and lots of cool accommodation facing breathtaking scenery. I stayed at Casa Gustavo, a beautiful well-maitained timber house near Potes, owned by a friendly British couple. I ate delicious food at local eateries and made the best use of my little time trekking through mountains and old little villages. I startet at Cobena and followed a faint path to the back of a farm and through woods. I did ... read more

May 2005 Santander is not exactly your archetypal weekend visit to Spain, but with the only real criteria being that it was cheap to get here and we had previously been, it got the vote. Santander is in Green Spain, which seems more than sufficient to put off most others … it could rain for a starter. Santander plays very much the second fiddle in the tourist stakes to Bilbao of those that head in this direction these days. This was reinforced as we left the plane and 90% of those on board got straight on an express bus to the aforementioned - it seems as with Newcastle, if you put a museum in a place and tell a few people south of Watford it’s trendy …… hey presto! Athletic Bilbao weren’t at home anyway and ... read more

How is fall going over there? I keep forgetting it's not summer anymore and am only reminded when I write down "blank de octubre" on my notes every day. I miss football...but I have futbol. I could really go for some brown leaves, though. The summer mindset is harder to get rid of on a beach like Santander. The weather was BEAUTIFUL and completely worth the 6 hour bus ride. We visited a palace of some sort on the hill and the caves of altimira, the latter of which was fascinating for several reasons. One, because we've been studying it in Historia del arte, and then there it was (well a replica of there it was) right in front of you. You can't visit the actual caves anymore. They had a rather eccentric video complete with ... read more

so yea, last week, since we had no classes or anything, me and four of my friends planned a little trip up north to the cities of santander (in the autonomous community cantabria) and then to bilbao and san sebastián (páis vasco- basque country). it was tons of fun and pretty cheap for all that we saw and did... so our train to santander left here at 4:30 on a tuesday afternoon and was set to arrive at 10:30. it was a nice train and seeing as we brought our friend don simon (a brand of box wine), the ride was quite tolerable. i had sandwiches packed from my residencia and then mo´s señora made us all sandwiches with tortilla española on top of that. getting in at night, we intended to just sleep on the ... read more

Ron: Saturday 22nd Left Potes and made our sinuous but beautiful way back along the gorge to the coast. Made better progress than anticipated so carried on past Santander to Islares. The campsite is situated between looming mountains and the sea. As we pitched paragliders floated over our heads. Eagles and vultures were using the same thermals. The local town of Orinales is accessible by beach at low tide. There is a big tidal range, the beach by the campsite reduces to the size of a tablecloth at high tide. There are thousands of small crabe exposed on rocks by the falling tide which are great fun to try and catch. We has excellent tortillas in the cafe overlooking the small harbour which was excellent. This is another very Spanish family oriented site with late meals ... read more
