A glorious sunny day even for November in these parts. Arrecife is pretty in that all the houses are maximum 2 storey and they are all painted white or cream by law. The island has very little rain and is volcanic. Between 1730 and 1736, multiple eruptions from the volcanoes covered the island in volcanic ash and lava. The cereal crops were all destroyed and those of the population who were left decided to plant vines. A 3-metre hole is dug down to the original soil and a single vine planted. This is covered at the base by volcanic ash and a small lava wall built around. The ash absorbs any moisture there is from the air. There are fields of these vine holes around the bases of the volcanoes. We visited two of the vineries ... read more

An old tree, old pyramids and two old towns We are now going to write about what we did in the second half of our vacation in Tenerife. When looking through the pictures it seems like we these days just saw a lot of old stuff. But please keep in mind that old can still be interesting and exciting. Or as T-800 put it in Terminator Genisys, "Old. But not obsolete." Icod The town Icod is on the north coast of Tenerife. It is a town that probably would see very few visitors had it not been for it being the home of the oldest dragon tree in the world. That tree has become an iconic symbol of Icod. Northwest Tenerife In the northwest of Tenerife there is an area with dramatic mountains and deep and ... read more

Sunday, April 10, 2022 Las Palmas, Gran Canarias Another gorgeous sun filled day. The Canary Islands have not disappointed. Point of fact – they have been MOST interesting and impressive. We are smitten. Here, in Las Palmas we find the most commercial, developed and populated of the islands. Nothing to raise one’s nose at. It’s all beautiful. We disembarked and managed to walk, and walk, and walk some more. We wandered around the somewhat deserted city streets on an early Sunday morning. We saw many carrying Olive branches (as opposed to Palm fronds) on this Palm Sunday. We thought much would be closed, but with a few ships in port – the city was, for the most part, open. At first, we meandered through the narrow streets eventually ending up on the promenade, beach side. In ... read more

The nature on Tenerife is far more interesting than the towns Back in January 2020 we came back from a trip in Brazil. Little did we then know that we would not be travelling abroad any more that year or the next. Well, we have visited Tallinn twice, but that doesn't really count as "travelling abroad". In these two years we have done plenty travelling in Sweden and we have enjoyed that immensely. But we’ve missed going to foreign destinations. Fast forward to spring 2022. Finally we felt that things were returning to almost normal again we booked a trip to Rhodes in Greece. But we got ourselves a quick reminder that things still aren't normal. About three weeks before we were scheduled to leave the company we booked with cancell... read more

Saturday, April 9, 2022 Arricife, Lanzarotta, Canary Islands Looking out over our veranda, the landscape resembles a lunar scene. Barren. Mountainous. Almost no trees off in the distance. So stark. Hmm. Should we even disembark? Well, we should give it a try, right? Boy…. are we glad we did. We have found an appreciation for the Canaries – perhaps a love? Absolutely unexpected, and gorgeous in its simplicity. Lanzarotta is dotted with over 100 volcanos, so there’s a LOT of pumice all over the place. Also used in some construction and artistic expressions. We walked about five or so miles today and enjoyed each and every step. We started with the natural lagoon, just outside the marina. The small row boats littered the lagoon at what is probably a very low tide. Painted in a variety ... read more

Friday, April 8, 2022 Santa Cruz de Tenerife We watched as the ship pulled into port in Tenerife. The ship pulled slowly into port and was met by the pilot within the breakwater. We are situated on the starboard side which as it turns out is alongside the port. We had a wonderful view from our veranda, so we spent the entire time of the veranda watching as the ship so elegantly and easily slipped into place. On the dock, we noticed an ambulance as well as a police car. Uh Oh. As the gangway was deployed and assembled, a second gangway, for the crew, was deployed from deck 4. Once the second gangway was completed off rolled a woman in a wheelchair escorted by medical staff, her husband and their combined luggage. She was not, ... read more

Shortly after New Year, on the 4th of January, I set off for my first overseas trip since Covid. I went on a one-week hiking trip to Tenerife. Preparing for the journey was a big thing and involved a lot of uncertainty. Travel regulations and regulations within different countries changed within days, and when preparing for the trip, I thought “Was this really worth it? Why did you not stay in Germany?”. I bought an additional Corona travel insurance that would refund me in case I would not be able to embark on my journey because of Covid. I needed to submit a certificate of vaccination and fill in a questionnaire that I would need to present upon arrival on Tenerife. I needed a negative Covid rapid test. When asking my travel agent how long in ... read more

The Maspalomas Dunes Special Natural Reserve is an immense expanse of sand which is continuously sculpted by the wind. The dunes are part of the San Bartolomé de Tirajana municipality in the south of Gran Canaria & have had protected status since 1994. The dunes emerged hundreds of years ago, fossilised remains spread far and wide by the wind. They provide a unique habitat on the island for African fauna including the giant lizard and several bird species. They are a living system that reaches maturity at 15 to 20 metres tall and at around 200 metres wide. Later, the trade winds (often blowing onto Playa del Inglés) push the sand inland. Scientists have discovered that the total surface of the dune field experiences periods of growth and shrinkage. At the moment, the dunes seem to ... read more

Travelblog Teneriffa 2021 4.-20. Nov.2021 Donnerstag, 4.

This was our last vacation pre-lock down. I took it for granted at the time. We organised it very casually and at the last minute. Little did I realise how things would change. How I miss that freedom now. It was a Sunday evening in February. Walking back from the Black Horse was as gruesome as it had been for four weeks. Within an hour we had booked to fly out to Tenerife the following Wednesday. We knew some friends of ours were due to arrive in Checkin Apartments Atlantida in Los Cristianos on the Saturday so, that is where we booked in. We paid £55 a night, it’s worth checking prices thoroughly as our friends paid £75 a night for an identical apartment. The apartments are self-catering, so there’s the usual; two ring hob, microwave, ... read more
