Well we’ve arrived…….the sun is shining and it’s a balmy 26 degrees, but that’s about all the positive I have to share so far. What we’ve seen of Maspalomas and its surrounding area leaves much to be desired. Yes its clean and the sun shines daily, but what do people do round here other than lie by the pool and wait to get accosted by some irritating person selling timeshares…… We’ve had some conversations with the locals and its not looking good for finding work to top up our dwindling finances either. Mmmmhh we’re only 8 days into our 6 weeks stay but so far its yawn all the way. Oh by the, the Jaimster is writing a blow by blow account of our time here in his blog (search for ‘Aber’ under Bloggers Nicknames), his ... read more

Today the Canarian News said there was supposed to be a Second Hand Market in the grounds of the Faro 2 Commercial Centre, unfortunately when we got there, it didn’t seem to exist, so instead we walked to San Fernando to take a look at the Municipal Market only to find that it contained the identical stalls to the one we visited in Puerto de Mogan on Friday. On our way out we spoke to one of the Thomson Holiday Reps and enquired about jobs. Unfortunately she told us that whilst they used to be able to hire “in resort” all recruitment now had to go through the UK and although she let us know if she heard of anything she was not particularly optimistic other than the prospect of selling timeshares we have both discounted. ... read more

Following on with the dream recitation, last nights contained a fruit shop, a hairdressers and my ex colleague and friend Bob. I also had a bad dream at one point which made me wake bolt upright but I don’t quite recall what that was. Today we decide that enough is enough and we are going to splash some cash and escape up the coast to Puerto de Mogan where there is a weekly market. So we are up early and off to the bus stop. The bus comes quickly but its not cheap at 5.80 Euros, still we need a break so its worth it. As we wind our way up the coast we pass a number of other resorts all of which look preferable to our own. Part of it is that the resorts we ... read more

Last night I dreamt that I was part of a team breaking into Bearings Bank, then I was working for Ralph Lauren and finally I dreamt my home was on stilts and had a glass room at the bottom in which one of my neighbours was doing Tai Chi which if you knew him is most unlikely. Dee’s back is hurting and she has decided she needs a day off from trekking today so I take myself off for a walk to Meloneras which is the next resort to Maspalomas. It’s not a bad walk. I pass many 4 and 5 star plush looking hotels and the seaside promenade is clean and smooth but once again it’s packed with unattractive older tourists. Arriving at Meloneras I find the ubiquitous empty shopping centre and a small beach ... read more

How long is a week? I’m not so sure but we have now been here a week today and if I was here on holiday I’d probably be about ready to go home right now. I woke at 5.30am after another fitful nights sleep, last night I dreamed of a girl I used to know called Linda, I’d been at some sort of reunion and there was something about falling in a lake, I wonder if it was a sign? Dee was tired after our long and tiring yesterday and since I didn’t want to wake her up by clattering around, I lay staring at the ceiling until the sun came up. We once again walked to Playa del Ingles and braved the busier today but still grim Yumbo Centre and visited the Tourist Information hoping ... read more

Today we got up early and once again set off for San Fernando, taking our usual route along the road. We found the Police Station and sat in line, once again there was one of those notices advising if we didn’t speak Spanish to depart and return with a translator and indeed when I gave my standard opening of “ Hola, Buenos Dias, Los sientio un solo hablo un poco Espanol” (Good Morning etc I’m sorry I only speak a little Spanish) to the first Police Officer we were directed to the next table along where a different officer also spoke no English but did seem more inclined to help us. The form I had downloaded from the internet before leaving was slightly different to that produced for us in the Police Station and we were ... read more

Before leaving the UK I signed on for Job Seekers allowance and it turned out that because I was receiving contributory allowance (i.e. from taxes I’d paid in) I could transfer this to Gran Canaria for up to three months. The only stipulation being that I had to register at the local job centre within a week of arriving. So today we set off on a quest to find the job centre. I had an address I’d gotten from the web before we arrived, but despite consulting the map the exact location remained elusive and it could have been in the centre of Play del Ingles or in the provincial capital 20 miles to the North. Luckily before setting off we checked with the receptionist and he kindly pointed us to an entirely different location in ... read more

Things haven’t really improved locally so today we decide to take a walk to Playa Del Ingles in the hope that we may at least find something to smile about. Like most places here it is quite a hike on foot, but the weather is once again a balmy (or should that be baking) 26 degrees and the sky is blue. I’ve not been particularly complementary over Gran Canaria so far and am pretty much wishing I had stayed at home, but I will admit to there being some things that are quite nice. As I’ve mentioned, the paths around the holiday complexes and running along the main roads between Maspalomas and Playa Del Ingles are nice and smooth and ideal for running, biking or roller blading, they are nicely landscaped and the are kept very ... read more

Ah yes another day in paradise. I wake after a fitful nights sleep tossing and turning dreaming of vampire hordes and Vietnamese prison camps. The beds here are some of the most uncomfortable I have ever slept on and have these horrible rubberised incontinence pants mattress protectors on them which squeak and rustle every time you move. What’s even worse on mine is the fact that the elastic holding the pad in place has decayed and so it just ruffles up and wraps itself around you. I seem to be a restless sleeper and so unlike Dee whose bed is completely as perfectly made in the morning as it was the night before, mine is a mass of twisted bedding. The pillows also are enormous thin width ways but very high and as solid as a ... read more

Time seemed to slow down today, we woke early had a nice breakfast packed our bags and decided we would take a walk down Maspalomas to finally look at the beach and the sea. It seems strange but although we have been here two days already we still haven’t seen the sea and for me at least that was one of the main attractions of moving here. The Hotel does run a courtesy bus but only a few times a day, so instead we decide to walk along the arroyo/storm drain and all goes well until we hit the main drag where we encounter the tourist hordes. We are just feeling slightly dissatisfied with ourselves marvelling at the grounds of the Princess Hotel which seems exceedingly plush and lavish. Marvelling at how the other half live ... read more
