I had planned today to get up early and go for a run, but although I woke early enough, as soon as I crept out of the bedroom into the lounge to get dressed in my running gear I could hear meowing at the patio door. When I opened the door, in trooped not one cat, but two. Kitten it seemed had teamed up with the ginger tom from a few days previously and had invited him to breakfast. They were both very vocal in making their wishes known and by this time Dee had awoken to see what all the fuss was about. They played nicely for a while until Ginger started to get a bit uppity with kitten and then started sniffing around the curtain he had sprayed on his previous visit. He took ... read more

Monday morning and since my shoulder whilst still hurting seems to be starting to improve I decided that today I would start on my some what postponed New Year exercise regime. I sneaked out of the bedroom and into the lounge did some squats, lunges and calf raises, fed the cat and then set the table for breakfast. Today we decided to take the bus up the coast to have a closer look at Puerto Rico. Fired up from yesterdays junk food and my talk of time shares, Dee armed herself with copies of her CV and steeled herself to approach likely work locations. Things did not start well when she spoke to a helpful and friendly girl in the tourist information who advised her that you needed a degree in travel and tourism to work ... read more

As befits Sunday, this was yet another day of rest, albeit one in which I swept and tidied the bungalow, did some more washing, typed a couple of emails and updated my blog. Whilst in reception using the WiFi I got chatting to a guy from Denmark who also uses the WiFI a lot and after chatting about our respective laptops and phones (boys toys) he went onto tell me he normally lived in Marbella but had spent the last year on Gran Canaria. He was very friendly and helpful and although I had already discovered much of what he had to tell me about discount bus passes and shopping in San Fernando etc it was kind of him to want to share his knowledge. I explained that Dee and I were looking for jobs, but ... read more

Saturday brought another food shopping trip to San Fernando this one being enlivened only by waiting in an enormously long and slow moving queue at the post office for Dee to post a Birthday present to her sister in Germany. To liven up the day I suggested we visit yet another shopping mall this time in San Fernando. Dee found a fabulous pair of purple shoes at an unbelievably cheap price and since she was reluctant to treat herself I treated her to them instead. Inside the mall was a Hyper Dino Supermarket so we decided to try this for our shopping for a change. Annoyingly while some items were cheaper than our usual Mercadona others were either more expensive or not stocked and so we had to pay another visit to Mercadona anyway. Dee hurt ... read more

Most of today was spent around the Hotel. I got up early and took a trip down to reception to check my emails. When I returned I found Dee entertaining our little breakfast visitor who we have now named Kitten due to her playful nature and insatiable desire for petting and cuddles. I did some washing and changed the beds in the morning and then after lunch Dee went to reception to check her emails and I decided to make some phone calls. Following my online application for the Holiday reps job my Mum received a call back in the UK from a lady called Shirley congratulating me on passing the first round of selection and asking that I call her on an 0870 number which in the UK is a non geographic number which many ... read more

Today we decided to splash out on the bus once again and take a trip to the other end of the island to see the capital Las Palmas. Home apparently to 1 million souls! The bus service on the island is quite good. The buses themselves are quite comfortable and more like coaches than the buses we are used to at home, but whilst they are clean, comfortable and plentiful, they aren’t particularly cheap, it costing us 11.80 Euros each for the return journey. The journey itself was not particularly inspiring, it was quite quick, only taking 45 minutes but the rows and rows of concrete hotels around Playa del Ingles just gave way to very grey and tatty looking poly plastic tunnels stretching for miles and sheltering the crops which in turn gave way to ... read more

Due to the lack of employment prospects on Gran Canaria we have been looking at options for what to do next. One of these is going back to the whole idea of WOOFing (working on organic farms). There is a website called HelpX amongst others which puts you in contact with various hosts around the world and in exchange for room and board you work for them. Whilst the majority of work is on farms there are some other hosts such as small hotels, campsites, hostels etc. We’ve applied to quite a few in Mallorca and today we got some replies. One in particular looks quite idyllic in its location. Dee is not entirely convinced due to our less than happy introduction to WOOFing in the Sierra Nevada but I think it may be worth giving ... read more

Ah two weeks in and we hardly seem to have done or seen anything, its raining again but is still nice and warm and after glimpsing the weather forecast for the UK whilst Dee was watching the TV last I guess we really should be thankful since it seems the UK has actually turned into the South Pole and is being whipped with artic blizzards. I got up early and played host to a storm of pigeons who have taken a fancy to our Muesli which we have been feeding them. Yesterday we even had a very brave little one who ventured in through the patio doors and almost hoped onto the table in his quest for more. They seem to particularly like the seeds and nuts but throw the dried banana and raisins back. I ... read more

This morning we had a little visitor for breakfast a lovely orange tom cat. Although once again in good condition and looking well fed he accepted our offering of tuna (which we bought for just such an occasion) and then proceeded to spray the patio curtain marking us for his daily breakfast stop. Today we had a day off, it rained most of the day so we decided to stay close to the bungalow and catch up on blog writing, planning and composing emails to holiday companies in search of jobs. In the evening we took a trip down to reception to use the WiFi and whilst chatting to the receptionist we discovered that the complex pool bar which is not too far from our bungalow apparently burnt to the ground last Thursday night while we ... read more

Since Sunday is supposed to be day of rest that’s exactly what we did. Dee spent the day making a beaded necklace, drawing and reading and I spent the day catching up on emails and finally witting this Blog. Today was also the start of Carnival on the island and I was quite keen to see it. Unfortunately Carnival seems to be centred around the main park in Las Palmas the capital which is at the other end of the island and a long and costly bus ride away. The opening party didn’t begin till 9pm and so we decided that it wasn’t really practical for us to make the trip. In the end it turned out to be just as well since we were woken not long after bedtime by the sound of torrential rain, ... read more
