Hi everyone, sorry for the lack of blogs recently but we have been just a tad busy getting ready to cross the Atlantic. We have been in Las Palmas on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands for the past 12 days. There are 218 yachts and crew here and everyone has been running around like blue a#@^ed flies getting their boats ready to go. We leave here tomorrow at 1.00pm for the official start of the crossing. The "Canaries are sensational and I will post more about our time on the islands of Isle Grasciosa and Lanzarotte when we get across to St Lucia as well as the time we have been here in Las Palmas. There are 218 yachts taking part in the rally, some in the racing division and the rest ... read more

Gran Canaria, Spain, August 5 - 9, 2009 The second installment of our time in Spain begins in Gran Canaria. Here we visited my dearest childhood friend, Bibi. When we were little our mothers were best friends, which made us practically inseparable. But then I moved to the U.S. and she moved to a small island off the coast of Morocco. It's been 13 years since our last visit, half my life. Time has done little to separate us however. Much of the visit I kept pinching myself, saying "It's really Bibi! I'm talking to Bibi!" It's funny to recognize the similarities we've experienced since we separated. We both moved to different countries around the same age and had to acclimate to new languages and cultures. We met our significant others in the same year and ... read more

We spent Saturday night in the Hotel Madrid. It's mainly famous for being the place where Franco spent the night before leaving the Canaries for Mainland Spain. I don't think it can have changed a lot since then. It may have been swept, but not much redecoration has been undertaken. It has photographs of history all over the walls. Engels, Garbo, Loren... Even the music was.... They were playing Sargeant Pepper in the bar. The hallway leading to our room was full of immense and very healthy plants. Open to the outside via a balcony it had a fountain which even ran some of the time. Our room had a tiled floor and a rug with robots on it. I am not sure that the robot rug was strictly congruous, but there was no effort to ... read more

Arriving in Puerto de Mogan was quite a relief after travelling through parts of Maspolomas and Playa del Ingles. We guessed wrong on the bus connection from San Bartolome, we should have changed in Playa del Ingles but soon found a connection with the help of a taxi driver. We failed to get on the first bus, a mass of our continental cousins from Germany crammed their way onto the bus, but got onto one half an hour later. Puerto de Mogan is quite a pretty little place, but the weather remained cold and looking like it might get wet. Finding a place to stay was not a problem, we ended up with a small apartment so then went shopping for coffee, food and a few bits. Then wandering around we got grabbed by a time ... read more

We went out for the day, a trip further into the mountains, to Tajeda. It was stunning. The mountain road, the views, the volcanic landscape. We had lunch in Tajeda, the best food so far, really good. On the way back we got a good view of the summit of Pico Del Teide rising above the clouds. During the day the temperatures are struggling to get close to 20C, but in the sunshine it is still easy to get burnt. After dark, with the north wind, the temperature drops like a stone, so another evening on Gran Canaria back in the hotel room by 19.30 and wrapped in blankets in an attempt to stay warm. The only positive is the 8 cans of Tropical (the local beer) bought from a shop in the afternoon have stayed ... read more

After a day trip to Las Palmas, nothing much to mention about, fun in a city way and pleasantly warm, the next morning we set off for San Bartolome, The bus ride through mountains was really spectacular with some amazing views down to the coast, crazy hairpin bends, ravines, and sheer drops, San Bartolome is located at the top of a valley affording some stunning views. Slowly as the afternoon wore on the cloud descended, by early evening covering the town in a light mist and a few drops of rain. With this rather unwanted weather the temperature fell to what was probably less than 10C and made worse by a chilling breeze. The town pretty much closed down after the day trippers left, so we grabbed some beer from a local shop and headed back ... read more

we arrived in Gran Canaria without any problems and, failing to find public transport to Aguimes, we took a taxi. It is not all that far. This is a very pretty town with some very strange statues. There is naked woman playing the cello who has a tape recorder inside her so she can broadcasr music (which doesn't all have cello in it), there is a donkey and a camel (the camel is right beh9nd our hotel room) and a dancing couple where he is dressed as a woman and he is dressed as a man. There is poetry on many walls. Today we went walking. We went uphill for about four hours. There were many lizards and birds of prey. The view from the end of the road was stunning. It took less than 3 ... read more

Early this morning we docked in Las Palmas on Grand Canaria. Unfortunately, it was a cold, windy and rainy day so we were not inclined to do much. I tried to find a WiFi site so I could use my laptop to send some photos, but since it was Sunday almost everything was closed. My computer showed some available connections, but their names didn't indicate where to go to find their passwords. The main purpose of the stop was to refuel because now we are heading across the Atlantic to the Caribbean whcih will take 6-7 days. Our next stop is the island of Antigua (which the British pronounce as if there isn't a "u".) We love this ship! The average age must be at least 70, but they are the most civilised (their spelling) group ... read more

The Canary Islands are a haven for middle-aged northern European holiday makers on package holidays, a place where they can warm their pasty bodies and eat food from their homeland. Does it sound like somewhere that we'd like to go? No, but the call for sunshine was too much for us and after ruling out our preferred destinations (Morocco, Egypt etc) as too expensive, off we headed to Gran Canaria and I must say we were pleasantly surprised! We arrived in the early hours of Sunday morning, had a big sleep in and then tried to work out what we should do during our week of sunshine. We realised the important thing to do would be to get out of the resort areas of Playa del Ingles (Beach of the English) and Maspalomas where there is ... read more
