Gran Canaria was by all accounts the sum of its expected parts: overly touristy, easy holidaying and convenient.
It’s been a while that I have been on such a trip. My preference as a ‘traveller’ (though since joining the rat-race I’m not sure I can still claim such a title) is always ‘raw’ travel to distant lands, with unperturbed nature, local peoples, and cultures strikingly different to my own. This trip was anything but. This trip was borne out of a need to utilise my remaining annual leave at work, to provide myself and mum a much needed break and to spend time staring at the sea and sinking into the sand.
The missions above were accomplished indeed. Largely the disappointments were the absence of real food and the inescapable fact of the ubiquitous carnival which could be seen (and heard) everywhere. At all hours.
The trip is worthy of a blog post if only to keep my travelblog up to date. Particularly since 2014 saw me leave the British Isles for two short winter weekend breaks.
There is more to come this year. Yes, 2015 will surely see me travel more than last.
