Marching off to battle.
Hello, As you can see we are now back at home in NZ. Freezing with a cold southerly bringing wind rain and snow to some areas. A bit of a shock to us after being in the northern summer. Still clad to be home and to be able to unpack the suitcase for the last time for a while. Had a great trip and created a lot of new memories. So what more can you ask for.

I did say that I would do a blog about our day in San Sebastian in Spain. It was one of those days when you seem to see so much and San Sebastian is such a lovely place, that you really feel very lucky. When we arrived we strolled down though the old town, came across a Cider tasting, lots of people, music and food, then strolling on came across the old Cathedral which is very nice. While there we realised that there was a wedding in preparation which we decided to watch develop. We felt that it was quite a high society wedding as everyone was dressed to the nines and all the comings and goings with people being dropped of by

car and walking in in groups, all looking a million dollars. When the bride arrived, she, as every bride does, looked amazing. It was a fun thing to watch with all the other spectators. While this was happening we were amazed to see a lot of people in period costume walking around and all the men were carrying guns. Didn't have any idea what was going on but soon a contingent of soldiers marched past with a band beating out the marching rhythm and the girls all blowing tin whistles, then disappearing down one of the small streets. We strolled on into the centre and came across a lot of gentlemen dressed in their finery period costumes. We had a chat with a gent who looked and acted like Napoleon. His english was good enough for us to understand that they were celebrating the return of San Sebastian to Spain from the French. This happened in September 1813 when a force of English and Portugese troops took the town after a prolonged battle. He was very proud of the fact that he was going to be the commander of the French who surrendered at the end of battle. We were

told there was going to be a reenactment so suddenly we were right in the middle of action. Guns firing, smoke in the air, bands playing with the pipes going strong. Hand to hand combat and more shooting as the English force drove the French back. Finally, a white flag waving in the square and lots of cheering and more gunfire to celebrate. An amazing thing to see and we were so lucky to be in the right place at the right time.

So after an action packed day, a Stroll around the beaches and going to the top of the hills to look out over fantastic San Sebastian, we bused our way home. A great place to visit with the beaches and the old town. Pip/Rod
