... Yes it was a big day and choosing photos is going to be impossible as we couldn't have had a more varied day. We left the Monastery with the sun shining, the bells ringing and a tremendous sense of peace. A number of us thought it would have been lovely to have a "down day" there as it was totally isolated and would be good for the soul but we totally understood it wouldn't suit everyone. Having said that we were rewarded with a fabulous and varied day beginning with the prettiest castle we have seen, the Royal Palace of Olite constructed in the 15th century by Charles III, King of Navarre (the region we were now visiting). It was huge with stairs up and down, turrets, arched windows, courtyards and must have been spectacular ... read more

Simple title, simple day but not so simple food!! A sleep in was VERY welcome and not having to depart until 10.30am a blessing. We went into the township of Laguardia which really only has retirees and business owners living there and is a great drawcard for tourists because of it's beauty, bell tower and clock. We thought it would be awash with those darn tourists but it was not so and all the locals were delightfully warm and welcoming when we checked if it was ok to take photos, where to sit for coffee, etc. We have finally worked out that tablecloths means wine or a meal (even if only 11am) and no tablecloths ok for coffee! The photos say it all and the video of the action figures in the clock at 12 noon ... read more

Hi, Well today we have completed our 4th day of biking and we have reached the town of Ezcaray, which we have yet to discover properly. We will be here for 3 nights and will just do the odd bike trip out from here. I mentioned in my last blog that the biking was a lot harder than we thought it would be. But, at the end of the day when you have reached your destination and had a shower, swim and then a beer or two you have a great sense of achievement in what you have achieved. I know that about 40 k's a day is not a long distance for a lot of bikers, but in this terrain, for us it has been a pretty big task. The terrain has been more up ... read more

Hello from Spain. Biking biking biking. But I'll just finish up the Thames and then get onto Spain. In Spain we had 3 nights in Bilboa with one day spent in San Sebastian which was great, a couple of very interesting things which we were lucky to see. I'll write about those tomorrow. Traveling down river and going into Windsor was great with the fantastic castle creating a great back drop as you come down the river. So, we are in a small Hotel in a village called Abalos way up in the hills with wine grapes for miles and miles. Quite a stark landscape but the distances that you look at and the vistas are remarkable. The hotel, home for 3 days is quaint and so friendly. The wine is cheap and beautiful. The tapas ... read more

We woke up in Llanes, grabbed a quick bite to eat, and hightailed it for Laguardia. This was a longer drive, long but amazing. We hugged the northern coastline and went through a whole bunch of mountains. It took us about 3 hours to get to Laguardia, which is small enough that we actually didn't get lost. Laguardia is a fortified hilltop town with all of it's original walls, and cars are not allowed in the city. So we parked outside and hussled our stuff in to the hostel. The city is incredibly cool. With it's narrow cobblestone streets and tall stone walls and buildings, Laguardia was like going back in time. Melissa and I stayed at Hostel Biazterri, which also had a restaurant. When we got there Melissa was starving, so we did an early ... read more
