Part 4 Mallorca June 24 We landed on the island of Mallorca and rented a car. We were so releived at how easy Mallorca is to drive. The roads were well marked and the infrastructure is better than barcelona. That was a nice change. Once we arrived, we quickly left the bussling city of Palma and headed to the rural center of the island. After a short drive, we arrived at our destination, the beautiful Hotel Rural Sa Torre de Santa Eugenia. The hotel was an old vineyard farmhouse was converted into a lovely villa in the middle of wine country. It looked as though we were in a spanish house in Paso Robles. IT WAS BEAUTIFUL. The hotel is surrounded by meditteranean gardens and all of the aged masonry shouted, "Old Spanish Villa." We spent ... read more

Riding the 1900's train to Soller and then transferring to the tramway from Soller to the Port of Soller is definitely very unique. From the port it is possible to take different boats around La Calobra area. The train ride by itself is a treat. Taking the round trip option on the first train and coming back on the last one was our way to go. The ride starts near Plaza de Espana in Palma Center from a picturesque train station in a private area close to the public transport train lines. The ride offers great views of the Tramuntana mountains with a short scenic stop looking down to the gorgeous town of Valldemossa. www.trendesoller.com Soller is small and cute with a little bit of everything for everyone. I opted for the local produce and handcrafted ... read more

Santa Eularia D’es Riu We are booked to fly to Ibiza for 10 days with Ryan Air and with the flight purchase was the option to get cheap parking near the airport, which was a bargain so we booked. Getting there was easy as was the transfer to the airport by the company who also pick you up on your return. Tip for travellers – definitely take these offers as parking at the airport is pretty expensive. The Malaga airport is relatively new with the 2 main terminals T 2 & T 3 interlinked. We have hand luggage only so getting on board was a breeze now that Ryan Air allows you to check in online & allocate your seats. The whole experience with RA is so much better than expected after our last ... read more

Majorca 3 We woke up today to an overcast sky and were expecting a poor day. However it was quite warm at 10 degrees when we set off on our bikes at 10 o'clock and the day improved as we made our way through Alcudia to Lluba for lunch. Again we encountered a large group of Team Sky riders going the opposite way and I thought I would take a photograph but with all the excitement all I took was a video of the Tarmac. I had to take a photo of a disused windmill instead. It was either that or another twisty gate. We passed along a very fertile plain which reminded me of Banks and Crossens near Southport growing potatoes, lettuce, beans and artichokes etc. We also passed some very variable ploughed land, some ... read more

Majorca 2 Saturday Jan 23 2016 Today was like a typical summers day in Lancashire with a high of 18 degrees and the sun burning my back at lunchtime in the square in Campanet. For the first time this week I took off my leg warmers and went into fingerless gloves and felt great. The first long climb, after leaving Port de Pollenca, was up the Col de Femenia at 515m and was a bit of a pull but we didn't push too hard to save our legs because there was not climbing to do to reach the cafe at the Coll de se Batalla. We did not stop since it was a bit early for lunch and it was full of posers on motorbikes. We chased down the hairpins to Caimari avoiding the stupid motorcyclists ... read more

Majorca January 2016 A week in Majorca in January is a nice choice when the Lancashire weather is doing its worst with cold, frost and rain. Majorca, which had rain three days before our arrival, greeted us with brilliant sunshine and temperatures in the mid teens. Nevertheless we needed long gloves and leggings, as you may expect in winter, but on several days we took off a layer and had fingerless gloves after our alfresco lunch in the town squares. The first three days found us doing a total of 150 miles heading out of Pollenca in the north of the island. Port de Pollenca is a nice seaside town with loads of excellent restaurants and cafes with shops selling everything you may need. Car and bike hire is a big thing here, as is selling ... read more

Just four days after arriving back from Ibiza, I was off to Spain's other famous island in the Balearics; Mallorca. I had also watched many a Wild On (with Brooke Burke) and Booze Britain episode featuring this tourist favourite and once again I was finally fulfilling a teenage dream by coming here. Except, that I'm not a teenager anymore, so I was definitely not going to mix it up this weekend with a bunch of British teenage yobs emptying their stomach contents on a beach in Magaluf - there is more to see and explore on the biggest island in the Balearics, which I was determined to do. After Ibiza had left a massive hole in my bank account, I was trying to do things a bit cheaper here - thus the decision to catch an ... read more

I had always thought that the lyrics to that Vengaboys song were "we're going to eat pizza." But no - it is about that notorious Spanish party island in the middle of the Mediterranean Sea. Ibiza. When I was at university, I remember watching all of those party documentaries such as Wild On (with Brooke Burke) and Booze Britain, on which Ibiza was regularly featured. Thousands of miles away, in my parents' house, I could only sit and admire the sun, sex, beaches, boat parties and superclubs that were appearing on my screen, wishing one day that I may be able to go. Just over a decade later and my dream was finally coming true...except that it wasn't really much of a dream anymore. Massive clubs, electro music, world-class DJs, 25€ a drink...it isn't really my ... read more

After almost one week in Palma the introduction week for the Erasmus students started on September 7th. I'll describe the activities day by day! Monday & Tuesday On Monday morning Yoran and I had an appointment at the local government in Palma with our landlord to get our Residents Card. With that card we can use the public transport with a 50% discount. It's quite some paperwork but luckily we had our landlord preparing everything for us :-) On Monday and Tuesday we had introductions at the university. It was the first time at the Universidad de las Islas Baleares so at first we had to find the right building. The campus is really big so we had some issues finding it. As Yoran and I were not the only ones who were a little later, ... read more
