Just four days after arriving back from Ibiza, I was off to Spain's other famous island in the Balearics; Mallorca. I had also watched many a Wild On (with Brooke Burke) and Booze Britain episode featuring this tourist favourite and once again I was finally fulfilling a teenage dream by coming here. Except, that I'm not a teenager anymore, so I was definitely not going to mix it up this weekend with a bunch of British teenage yobs emptying their stomach contents on a beach in Magaluf - there is more to see and explore on the biggest island in the Balearics, which I was determined to do. After Ibiza had left a massive hole in my bank account, I was trying to do things a bit cheaper here - thus the decision to catch an ... read more

After almost one week in Palma the introduction week for the Erasmus students started on September 7th. I'll describe the activities day by day! Monday & Tuesday On Monday morning Yoran and I had an appointment at the local government in Palma with our landlord to get our Residents Card. With that card we can use the public transport with a 50% discount. It's quite some paperwork but luckily we had our landlord preparing everything for us :-) On Monday and Tuesday we had introductions at the university. It was the first time at the Universidad de las Islas Baleares so at first we had to find the right building. The campus is really big so we had some issues finding it. As Yoran and I were not the only ones who were a little later, ... read more

After a great internship in Paris it's time for my next adventure! This time with a good friend, Yoran. From September until February we will be studying and living in Palma de Mallorca. In this first blogpost I'll tell you about the whole process of searching a room, arranging the Erasmus grant and my first experience in Palma, enjoy! Application process As a part of our studies International Business and Languages Yoran and I had to study a year abroad to develop our cultural awareness and to learn Spanish. Already in November/December 2014 we had to choose three universities where we'd like to go study. We both really liked Palma and heard good stories of this university so this became our first preference. After two months we got an email from the Hanze University that we'd ... read more

It was 2007 that Erin and I picked up a used and rather beat up Ford Escort station wagon and began our journey around the Northern coast of the Mediterranean. It’s been exactly that long since I first dreamt of being the lucky folks I had always seen looking back at us on shore from their beautiful sail boats, far removed from the parking headaches and frantic selection of beach loungers. I wanted the calm, move at your own speed, water at your toes vacation that appeared to be only for the wealthy. With shared enthusiasm, Erin and I began our research of locations in late 2014 that would maximize the experience. The intent was to relax and experience hidden coves, harbor restaurants as well as those nights of nothing but us bobbing in the gentle ... read more

We have a cocktail party at 11am to meet the captain today, we slept in till 10am, rats missed breakfast, got dressed in our casual but tidy went to the Top Sail Lounge for vodka martins, salmon, salami and caviar canapés, no don't have to worry about me wanting that again I can't see what all the fuss is about, we had quick chat with the captain, Lexie asked him couple of questions but he has limited English so didn't understand, we had photos taken. It was raining, thunderstorms again. We arrived at Palma da Mallorca at 2.30 pm but we don't leave port until midnight so we got changed and got a shuttle bus to the port of Mallorca, another beautiful place, we arrived and hired Segways then the rain came, it was wet but ... read more

Total distance travelled from Santos: 5837 nautical miles We had made an executive decision to stay on board and mind the ship!! It was hot. 36 degrees C. Peace at last!! Roisin and I have both visited Valencia before and all we'd be doing is the 'same old, same old' walking around the gothic quarter and paying $19.90 each for the privilege of being taken in to the city centre. It made a pleasant change to walk around the ship and not have to negotiate over-keen and over-enthusiastic Brazilians!! Stick a few Goths in the Safari lounge and the ship would even have its very own Gothic quarter!! The air temperature was in the mid-30s (centigrade) which is not ideal for city sightseeing. We have been ashore at a different port for the last six days ... read more

How time flies, another month has gone by with no blog. We have been busy though, our busiest month for visitors since we set sail back in June. We have really enjoyed seeing our sailing life through others’ eyes. Sailing is certainly highs and lows in the Med. A lot of motoring when there is no wind and we potter along, drink in hand, then other days, out of nowhere the winds pick up and we have a spritely glorious sail. But there are also some rough days with buckets of water hitting us in the face, lunch at 35degrees and the odd green faced friend. Luckily regardless of the winds, most days are sunny and hot – which helps. Being cold and wet sucks on a 12hr sail. It’s fair to say we have had ... read more

Palma de Mallorca 2014 This trip was something different for me, I went on it with just my dad, that wasn't the original plan, he was meant to go with his partner but in the end she couldnt make it and the place was offered to me ;) and who could say no to that? We hired a car, so pretty much travelled all the island in the week. Driving on the other side of the road was fine but going around a round-a-bout the wrong way is very strange! haha ~ its like your brain tells you not to do it :p We got used to it after a few days, though I still often opened the wrong door and accidently sat behind the wheel lol oops ;) We stayed in a lovely hotel in ... read more

Catching up on Blogs - moreover a record for H&H for the future - and realised we had missed this one from last summer! Headed out there a bit too early this time around - the weather was nice, but swimming pools and sea hadn't quite warmed up! A nice little break, but learnt a bit about holidays with kids. All inclusive deals are great - but the novelty wears off after a few days (we were there for 10)! Eating is a huge part of a holiday, and without the need to go to restaurants or cook there seems to be something missing! Kids clubs are good - but they need to be at the same time - we spent most of our time working out when to drop off and pick up (H&H ages ... read more

Winter is finally over; not that it was long here in Majorca, but it was cold. I haven't been so cold in my own house for... ever! Luckily we have a chimney, but Majorcan houses are prepared for the heat, not the cold, so from December to April everybody cuddles up in front of the fire and waits for Spring. Majorca looks great in Spring: all covered in green and full of flowers everywhere; shame they won't last long, as soon it will be too hot to bare. This is the thing with this island: it goes from very cold to very hot nearly from one day to the next! To me, this is the best time of the year to be here, so we are making the most of it before it gets too hot ... read more
