A week in Alcudia, Mallorca, with my husband, my sister and her husband ... hmmm I was a little worried - I thought it would be high rise and tacky... I was wrong! I found the old town of Alcudia and some Roman ruins, more later... We stayed at the Soliceto Apartments which were about 900 metres from the beach. The apartment was fine, and the property had a bar and restaurant, and a small pool, residents were allowed to use the larger pool of the hotel next door. There was a supermarket nearby and some cheap and cheerful restaurants and bars. The Gool Stadium restaurant next door served lovely breakfasts! The weather was supberb - very hot. The beach was great - big and busy - the sand was fine and the sea was shallow ... read more

For Nic's birthday, Dave whisked her away to an amazing hotel in Cala d'Or, Mallorca. The weather was lovely and we spent our time chilling out on the beach and eating lots of lovely Spanish food. Mmm. Don't get too jealous looking at the photos! :-)... read more

Home from home. Mondrago and Marks Bar are almost as familiar as Twickenham and the Town Wharf. Been so many times now since 94, but still escaped the Caves of Drach ! Sangria, tapas, paella and mum's spag bol !... read more

Magaluf with the lads. Well what can I say about this place loads of cheap booze, lovely beaches and so so so many Brits it is untrue. I cannot wait to get away to Thailand even more now, I met loads of people that had travelled so it was nice to talk to people that had experienced what I am going to and pass on a few hints. I cannot tell you too much about local life scenery or local culture as it is what it is over there it was a booze fest, but there were some very nice excursions as part of the booze fest. I must recommend going to "Pirates" and we went on a Catamaran cruise which was really nice, very scenic. I was a little drunk on most nights but the ... read more

Palma de Mallorca The walk in from the ship proved to be quite a long way. Especially in the rain! When we first left the dock, John and I stumbled into the fort over looking the bay nearly 360 degree views of the island from the ramparts. The construction of these forts continues to amaze us, the pure thought that they were built by hand without the tools of the present day contractors, the sheer strength and time it would have taken to build. Cut from the stone of the area and how ingeniously they used of the landscape. As we were walking into town without a map not knowing which way to go it started raining, so we ducked into a very modern shopping mall, and shopped for a jacket for me and went into ... read more

We continue on the road from the overlook just east of Port de Pollenca. The road down to Platja da Formentor is much like other secondary roads we've travelled across--small guardrail, two thin lanes (one for each direction), lots of curves and lots of steep drops. As we "bottom out" just near Platka da Formenta, the road becomes straight and cuts through a forest. Emerging from the forest, one finds themselves several hundred meters above the ocean, again with steep cliffs. The next 11 kilometers gives a roller-coaster enthusiast a good adrenaline rush. After 11 kilometers of Bethany wearing out the "oh-s#!t handle" and hogging the middle of the road whenever possible, we arrive at the lighthouse at Cap de Formentor. This lighthouse is on the last windswept pinnacle of this stretch of granite protrusions. Its ... read more

WELCOME TO MY WEBLOG. This is a first in a continuing series of posts of my travels throughout Europe. Often accomodating me will be my lovely and talented wife, Bethany and, on certain occassions, Finnegan, our 9-month old Collie. We currently live and work in Giessen, Germany, about 45 minutes north of Frankfurt. Bethany and I just returned from a weekend Mallorca (sometimes Majorca)--an escape from otherwise dreary Giessen. The weather was beautiful--probably 60 degrees with lots of sun and few clouds. We were in Mallorca from early Saturday morning until late Sunday night. We flew out on an "o-dark-thirty" flight from Cologne on HLX--an airline now high on my list of the low-cost variety--and landed at about 0830. We walked past the rental car stands. This is a big mistake if you are visiting Mallorca ... read more

We departed Lluc headed for Port de Pollenca, where we planned on finding accomodations for the night. The drive was down an extremely windy road, much like the highway we traversed to get to Lluc. This does provide for a lot of beautiful vistas, even if they come on sharp corners with heavily-dented guard rails that pitch over thousand-plus foot high cliffs that cause my wife to grab the "covert oh-s#!t handle" (the one that's attached to the armrest in the door). The fading light provides some nice orange hues on the high rock walls of the Serra de Tramuntana. We arrive in Port de Pollenca with the days last light and "pahk the cah". Our first mission is to find a room, which we do at Hostal Corro, on the main drag that leads into ... read more

Motorhome News from Europe 14. Spain January 2005 Alicante - Mallorca - Palmanova - Palma - Valdemossa - Ebro Delta Valencia & Snow on the beaches in Palmanova, Mallorca This week has been much warmer, with constant sunshine and daytime temperatures of up to 24C. Night times became warmer north of Alicante, contrary to everyone’s predictions that we were heading in the wrong direction and it would be colder further north. The coast south of Valencia yielded loads of excellent birding, with rocky headlands, marshes and flooded rice fields. Significant new species for the list this trip included Red breasted Flycatcher, Tree Sparrow and Water Pipit. Campsites were beginning to empty again. After the bustling coastal sites in the south, this was quite surprising. Perhaps it’s because they’re also quite expensive near Valencia, as with most ... read more
