On the way to Dinner
In the background are the smelly steps we aptly named piss alley On Friday the 19th of August Alesha and I headed to Gatwick in time for our 6.20pm Easyjet flight and in true easyjet fashion our flight was delayed for not one, not two but four hours!! A gas leak was the reason so in all honesty i'm glad they swapped planes but we weren't that pleased about arriving in Palma so late (2.30am). On arrival we had a very grumpy taxi driver who drove very eratically and unhappily to our 5 star accomodation. We also had a very drunk kiwi try and get in the taxi with us and if he'd been able to tell us where he was going we may have been able to take him but he told both taxi drivers he wanted to go to Clapham (this is at palma airport!!) very amusing to watch but very embarrassing for our country.
On our first night we probably had the worst sleeps of our entire lives -a combination of 30 degree heat + no fan + extreme outside noise (ie youths partying in piss alley) + mosquitos + bad earlplugs + streetlight and both awoke feeling a little worse for wear!! It was at this point
Felix, Me, Dan and Lesh
At the Tiki Bar (residents bar) we realised that the reviews weren't wrong and maybe we should have tried to find somewhere elsewhere to spend our 7 nights!!
On our first day we headed out to the nearest beach by the town, it took us a good 45 minutes and two buses to get there (which we later learnt we could easily walk) but we enjoyed our day on the beach in the very hot sunshine and in the evening sat down for a nice italian meal. Afterwards we did a short 'cocktail bar crawl' until we ended up at the 'Tiki Bar' (really cool bar for residents with Rhiannons friends Dan, Felix, Bianca and co) that Rhiannon put us in touch with. It was a random but cool set up with a pool and it's own bar and all the antipodeans that were there were dressed as fairies and goblins and had amazing tans!!! Was a good night out for a Saturday.
On Sunday we decided to hire a car and head out to one of the beaches we'd been recommended. With a basic map and few signs we soon realised that it wasn't as easy as it could have been to find
the beach named 'Alcudia' so Lesh pulled out her phone and navigated us to 'Pollencia' which was another beach we'd been recommended. We had a lovely day (again on the beach) stopping for bad burgers for lunch and in the evening had a meal of Calamari, Fish and Chicken at a lovely restaurant before driving back to Palma in the dark. Alesha and I made a good team with her navigating and my driving!
Monday we headed off in the car again and this time made it to Alcudia, the beach was gorgeous and we spent the fourth day reading our matching books and almost melting in the hot hot sun. Every time we took a dip we'd discuss which part of the book we were up to and what was going to happen! That night we went to the italian place we went to on the first night to have a 'pasta dish with 6 different types of pasta'. Sadly it didn't taste anywhere near as good as it looked so we went home a little disappointed!
Tuesday we'd taken the car back so we walked into town, bought some better mosquito repellant and earplugs so with
all our deterrants combined we were definately in for some better nights sleep! We spent the day on the beach by the town and headed back to our room earlyish to get ready for Chase and Status in Magaluf. We showered and then crammed onto a bus (with 101 people on it) and sweated our way to Shagaluf for what was an awesome performance (as per usual) by Nero and Chase and Status. After MANY drinks (or was that just me? whoopsie haha) caught a taxi home at the end of the night.
Wednesday we headed back to the same beach after McDs for breakfast, spent the day on the beach then met up with an old school friend Trent who was living and working in Palma with his fiancee. Even he commented on the extreme heat and said he'd had his first 2 hour rugby practice the week prior. Not only was it a draining 2 hours but half of the team were vomiting mid way through because of the intense heat! Worst thing was he didnt' even really want to play rugby he was just doing it to make friends! haha.
Thursday up early again cherishing
every moment with our fan that Alesha had asked the lady at reception for and headed out by bus to Illetes beach. Spent the day on loungers (which we had made quite a habit of by now) finishing off our books and sadly I had to hide from the sun cause it was just too hot by this point and my poor skin couldn't handle!! After packing our suitcases we finished the day with Champagne Sangria, Gyoza and Chinese for Dinner.
On Friday we were up and atom again and headed to Cala Major beach, had a lovely last day ate lots of icecream and headed to the airport at 7pm for our flight at 10.20.
Overall we had a great time, the people were friendly and there was much more R&R than our party holiday in Ibiza so it was really nice. My only complaint (dare I say it) was that it was actually too hot!! It was on average 37 degrees each day so almost too hot to sunbathe and absolutely unbearable with a hangover!!
I also have to mention that Alesha and I decided to buy some shower gel, moisturiser etc to share for
our week as we had no room in carry our carry on. On one of the first nights I pulled out the moisturiser, started rubbing it all over my arms and legs and said to Alesha 'eww this smells wierd' she then replied 'it smells like veet..' next thing you know we're in the bathroom madly washing off which wasn't moisturiser but depilatory cream!!
You'd think we would have learnt our lesson but later in the week I bought some bright green aloe vera gel to soothe my heat rash and after applying it all over (in the middle of the street) realised it was shampoo! So I made a nice little pool on the floor of the bathroom at the italian place we were having dinner at and washed it all off!!
Apart from that Alesha's spanish was pretty good so we didn't have too many problems and lots of the menus were in Spanish anyway. We didn't quite stick to budget (who does on holiday) and it was a shame we didn't get to see Rhi but it was a great end to what will be my last European summer holiday for a very very long
time!!!
and that's the second to last blog you'll be getting too so I hope you enjoyed it :-)
