We’re a bit slow off the mark this morning after a long day of travelling yesterday. We decide to catch up on a bit of admin including reviews of some our recent experiences in Morocco. I think it should be OK to let the world know about some of the less savoury aspects of our experience out in the desert now that we’re safely out of the country - the guide who didn’t do any guiding, paying top dollar to “sleep” on wet towels in an oven like tent only to find out later that the guide’s tent had air conditioning ….. I think my blood pressure might finally be starting to return to something close to normal. Our next stop is Bologna in Italy, and the guys who run the apartment we've booked there seem ... read more

Today we’ve got a long and convoluted day of travelling back to Spain, this time to the Atlantic Coast city of Cadiz. As we wait outside the Riad for our taxi we watch on as one of the young staff members feeds a small army of cats in the garden next to the street, something she apparently does every day. So many cats! We feel like family as we drive off - enthusiastic waves from owner Reibal, and his two trusty assistants Omar and cat girl … well I assume that was the sentiment; I suppose they could just be relieved to get rid of us. … and just in case anyone was wondering, the dodgy taxi driver who bought us to the riad when we first arrived in Fes and then left in a hurry ... read more

It feels a bit cooler today, although everything’s relative I suppose; I’m sure you could still very comfortably fry an egg on the metal table out on our terrace. We’ve got a long day of travelling to North Africa tomorrow, where we’re led to believe it might be even cooler still. Who would have thought. We’re looking forward to this like a hole in the head (the travelling that is, not the destination, otherwise presumably we wouldn’t have planned to go there - excuse the nonsensical text, it’s been an uneventful day and I’m struggling to think of things to write about. Sensible readers should probably stop here), so we prepare ourselves by doing very little. I tell Issy that I can’t leave here without swimming in the sea at least once, so I head out ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Frigiliana July 19th 2023

Today’s planned exercise is a ten kilometre or so bus ride up into the mountains to the village of Frigiliana. It is again ridiculously hot. It’s a long hike to the bus stop and probably feels more so due to the temperature. The bus struggles its way up the steep road to the village square. It’s very cute - whitewashed buildings clinging to the hillside, interconnected by a maze of steep narrow alleyways. The east side of the village hangs precariously over the edge of the Higuerón River gorge … and good to note that if I miss the bus I can hike 14 kilometres down the gorge back to Nerja. It’s so hot that I probably won’t still be alive when I get there, but still, always nice to have options. The historic centre looks ... read more

We spend the morning doing very little, something our cute apartment is very well suited to - double glass doors opening onto a large terrace with stunning views down over Playa Burriana. Eventually I succumb to itchy feet and head out for an aimless wander. It feels a bit on the warm side, and it seems that this would indeed be an accurate assessment. News outlets are reporting that southern Europe, particularly Italy, Greece and Spain, are in the grip of a massive heat wave, with the head of the World Health Organisation tweeting yesterday that “in many parts of the world, today is predicted to be the hottest day on record”. The weather system that’s causing all of this has been dubbed Charon, after the mythical Greek boatman who ferried lost souls off into underworld, ... read more

First up this morning is a long steep hike down the cliff and back up the other side to the tourist train stop for a ride out to the Nerja Caves. Well actually that was the second hike for the day. The first one was two kilometres each way horizontally and what felt like a similar distance vertically in a quest for toilet paper. Now our very nice apartment has most things that open and shut, and these are listed in a very detailed 50 item long “inventory” of things that should be here … and if any of them aren’t still here when we leave …. well I get the impression that this wouldn’t end well for us. Hopefully we’ll be let off with a warning if the “hand soap x 2” and “rubbish bags” ... read more

Today we bid a sad farewell to our cute little Malaga apartment as we head fifty kilometres or so east along the coast to the town of Nerja for the next leg of our Spanish sojourn. We’ll be taking the bus, so I take a few minutes to check the tickets just to make sure everything’s in order. And just as well I did. The rules include “avoid talking to other passengers”. Huh? I tell Issy that in the unlikely event of us seeing any long lost friends on our chariot we must just ignore them and look the other way, or we risk getting kicked off. I’m now also starting to wonder if we're even allowed to talk to each other. We board in silence, to find everyone else chattering away across the aisles with ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Torremolinos July 15th 2023

Today we decide to get a glimpse of tourist-central Costa del Sol with a quick twenty minute train ride south-west down the coast to Torremolinos. I was a bit skeptical about this exercise - the whole place just looked like a mass of ugly high rise hotels from the bus on the way back from the Caminito del Rey a couple of days ago, but it’s clearly very popular so we decide it’s worthy of a second look. And it does indeed look a lot more attractive close up. We get off the train and make our way through cute alleyways lined with tourist shops, and then on down some steep slippery steps past yet more tourist traps onto the Playa la Caracola. We thought sunlounges might be in short supply here, but no, we’re quickly ... read more

We sleep long after yesterday’s exertions, and as I lie in bed half in dreamland I can‘t help but reflect on a couple of other apparent oddities of life here in Malaga. They‘ve got Un Museo de Videojuegos, which unless I’m very much mistaken translates to "a Museum of Video Games". Now I think most of us can probably cope with museums displaying artefacts from Ancient Greece and Rome … but things that were only invented last week? Now we didn’t go in, but I can’t help but wonder what exactly is on display - it’s a bit hard to imagine a bunch of 12 inch floppy disks with “Pac-Man“ written on the covers attracting too many customers. One of the busier squares in the middle of the city has pairs of wooden seats bolted to ... read more

Europe » Spain » Andalusia » Ardales July 13th 2023

Today we finally get to go on our postponed tour to the Caminito del Rey, the Path of the King… well that’s assuming they’ve fixed the brakes on the bus. And if they haven’t, well our last post was probably just that. We get to the pickup point a few minutes early, but the bus is full, which probably means our pick up’s the last. We run the gauntlet of angry stares to the few spare seats up the back. Fortunately a couple of gents get in several minutes after us, so we’ve now been relegated to only third and fourth on the list of most despised passengers. First stop is the impossibly cute village of Ardales perched on a hillside some sixty kilometres or so north-west of Malaga. The absolute number one rule here would ... read more
