We had booked onto the 9.30am roof tour of the cathedral. Apparently, this is the third largest cathedral in the world. I later had a look and that is true, with it coming in behind St Peter’s Basilica in Rome (no surprises there) and one in Brazil somewhere. The largest British cathedral was a surprise, as it was Liverpool, coming in at number seven. The cathedral was built in three different centuries and once it was pointed out, the difference is styles is obvious. The first part was built in the 12th century, but was actually originally a mosque. You can see the Islamic type architecture, albeit with various Christian artefacts added. The dominant part was built in the 15th century and is in the imposing Gothic style. Despite the scale, it only took 72 years ... read more

I got up early for some photographs of the impressive cathedral, but lit up in the dark and, hopefully, without all the crowds who are filling the streets until way after my bedtime. There were a few people who were still enjoying their Saturday night out, but only a few. Sadly though, the illuminated building was a non-starter as the flood lights had been turned-off. It wasn’t a total wright-off, however, as the cathedral looked particularly stunning when the sun came up and it was bathed in the red, early morning light. It was nice to listen to the bells striking as I was waiting for some light. We had decided that we would go on the hop-on, hop-off sight-seeing bus tour, which are usually great to get some additional information and history, and to find ... read more

Breakfast included freshly squeezed orange juice, which I suppose you could expect in Seville. In fact, a lot of the trees were still covered in oranges, although, sadly, it was the wrong time of year for the famous orange blossom, which is supposed to create a lovely fragrance all over the city. We now got to see Seville in daylight and we were not disappointed. It’s a stunning city. We decided to start with a walk to the Parque Maria Luisa, the highlight of which is the Plaza de Espana. What we didn’t know is that today Seville is hosting Spain’s annual Armed Forces Day and there was going to be a huge parade through the centre of the city. Whilst it did make some parts of the city inaccessible, it did pull all the crowds ... read more

Nothing has changed. I can’t stand Luton airport, which, despite all the building work seems to be getting worse rather than better. It's getting more and more 'Ryanair' every time we go there, starting with being charged for simply dropping people off and with cameras everywhere to enforce it. Next, there’s the building work itself as this airport seems to be in a constant state of ‘improvement’. It’s a long, long process, but they may get there eventually. Then there is the baggage drop, which you have to do yourself now. Mind you, I can’t just criticise Luton on that one, as we had the same experience at Heathrow last year (see ). Needless to say, it didn’t go smoothly as the label needed to be reprinted and then our bag jammed in the machine and ... read more

The train journey from Malaga to Seville was excellent. we took the slow train for 35 Euros return. not bad for a 3 hour rail trip. The scenery from Malaga to Seville was initially stunning as we climbed into the mountains across gorges with great views of river valleys. we passed through some long tunnels and finally the terrain became flatter with lots of olive plantations. We got off at St Bernardo station in Seville. it is easy from here to get on a tram for 1:40 Euro to Plaza Nueva in the centre of Seville. This was a short stroll away from our hotel, Las Casas de los Mercaderes. Next day we started with a visit to Seville Cathedral. This is a huge edifice and extremely spacious inside. There was so much to admire both ... read more

A very comfortable and unrushed train journey to Seville. Jane read and dozed while I viewed the ever changing countryside with its mountains, undulating hills covered with olive groves, grass fields for animal feed, sunflower crops and cereal crops as well as small farm hamlets scattered along the sides of the gentle valleys. Seville! A new experience for Jane and myself was the taxi ride from the station to our accommodation through the narrowest of narrow streets enclosed by high walled buildings; that no one could fit either side of the vehicle. Jane felt a little claustrophobic as the ride progressed. Our hidden but once we saw our destination all was well. This cozy, informal hotel is set in a restored 18th-century property in the Barrio de Santa Cruz district and is a 5-10 minute walk ... read more
