The bear and the tree.
This is the symbol for Madrid. Some of my friends took multiple photos of this all over the city. Hola!!!! Long time no talk, sorry about that. I would have done more blogs, but until this weekend there hasn't really been anything interesting going on. I have just been taking classes, writing essays, and eating yet more yummy Spanish food. Classes are going well, by the way, nothing too taxing. I even made it to the beach for a weekend. And well, I also burned my back there.
Funny story, although incomplete without pictures (I can't take them of my own back). Anyway, I went to the beach for the first time on a saturday and I was meeting a friend there. I arrived first, laid out all my stuff, and put my sun screen on; at least all of the areas that I could reach, my back not being one of them. I thought to myself, "I will just wait for Caroline to get here to put lotion on my back." Yeah, I forgot, and we were out there for about five hours. Needless to say my back was fire red. Funny thing though, it was only red in the areas that I couldn't reach myself; so it ended up being this very interesting shape on my
back, that got even funnier when it turned to tan. I just can't put into words how ridiculous my back looks right now and I am embarrassed to go back to the beach with it in this condition. I mean, it looks pretty hilarious, maybe I can have someone take pictures later for you to see.
Anyway, up until this weekend that has been the only exciting thing happening, my crazy tan. However, as you can see by the pictures, we had our excursion to Madrid this weekend. It was amazing. Definitely big european city with beautiful buildings, monuments and such. I loved it and we actually might try to make a trip back. Plus, yet again the food was incredible. Our first night there we ate at an italian buffet. We ate so much food that I am suprised that we could walk out afterwards. I mean we are talking almost to the point of gluttony here. It took us days to be hungry again after that one. Breakfast was kind of a bust though. We got these coupons for a little bakery that wasn't all that good and the people that worked there were extremely rude
to us. It took us forever to explain to them that we didn't want their prized pastries (which sucked), but only a piece of bread. It was ridiculous.
Other than that it was a really good time. I think one of my favorite parts, though, was the Prado art musuem. It was amazing. First, it was huge and filled with beautiful paintings, but also these are master artists that we are talking about: Velasquez, Goya, Rembrant, Greco etc. I could have stayed there for hours. The only disappointing thing was that some of Goya's most famous paintings from the war time were getting ready to be put on display in a special exhibit that actually opened yesterday I think, or some time soon; so we didn't get to see those, but I bought a postcard of one of them while I was there.
Speaking of paintings, I almost bought a painting that I found in this cute little side shop in Madrid. It was of New York City and I fell in love with it, but it was 95 euros which is about the equivalent of 150 dollars. It was a little steep, but I was
real close to actually giving in which suprised even me. I think that I am the cheapo in our little group here. We are trying to decided right now where our next trip will be and I keep shutting places down because of the price. I am probably really frustrating my friends, but I am also trying to save my money so I can go to ROME!!! I don't when I will be there, but be there I will.
Well, I can't really think of anything else that has been going on. A whole bunch of families/parents/significant others of my friends are coming in this weekend, so that should be fun. One family is even bringing some ranch dressing for me. I am quite excited about that. I hope that everyone is doing well. I have heard that quite a few in the family have been in the hospital/at the doctor's for some reason or other. I hope that everyone is feeling better and I am praying for you. I love you all!!!!
