To escape the miseries of winter at Sauble Beach this year we decided on the south of Spain in January and February then Italy in March.

We did a combination of self booking (Air bnb) and had a knowledgeable agent help us with trains and tours in Italy.

The first week was spent in Madrid with a day trip to Toledo; now we are in Malaga in a cosy apartment until the end of February.

Here is the first installment of our latest adventure.

This cosy little place was our home in Madrid for a week. It was in a great location and had slightly more room than Gust O'Wind.

This art museum houses some of the greatest works of art of the Western world...Picasso, Van Gogh Renoir etc....a bit overwhelming.

We took a day excursion to this stunning ancient walled city just south of Madrid.

Harmony

Toledo at one time had roughly equal populations of Jews, Muslims and Christians, apparently living together in tolerance and harmony.

Yet another overwhelming Spanish monument to Catholicism the power and wealth of the church in Spain.

In one of the many ornately decorated rooms of the cathedral. We were told that the clergy who commissioned this work were not impressed with the "garish" scarlet clothing of Jesus, so didn't ask the artist back for more work.

Not all of our orders in restaurants have been successful. Here we thought we were ordering a mixed cold platter...it was, just all various dried spicy meats.

Very popular here. A restaurant will have a few legs hanging up and the waiter will slice off as much as you want.

Quite a fascinating museum tracing Spain's naval (Armada) adventures from before Columbus to the present.

We couldn't handle too many museums/galleries in a row but the Thyssen was excellent, filling the gaps left by the Prado. This is a Renoir.

There are so many beautiful buildings in Madrid, everywhere you look. Very few big office buildings like the ones we are used to seeing in North America...these have style.

G'day
A great start to your snow free escape! Re the orange trees lining the street - that's unique, though I couldn't help thinking, with Seville to the north west and Valencia to the north east, there had to be oranges between! Cheers. Garry
