What a weekend! My parents arrived last week in Priego on Tuesday. I showed them the Balcon del Ardave and the Fuente del Rey, as well as the rest of Priego, which took all of an hour. We had lunch at the Barbacoa on Tuesday because I wanted mom to try the "secreto" and she indeed loved it. Wednesday they went to Granada while I was at school to visit the Alhambra. Wednesday night we just made some tortilla at my apartment.
Thursday after school, we drove from Priego to Ronda which is supposedly the spiritual home of bullfighting. Although I didn't see much in the way of bullfighting aside from the ring, but the city itself was gorgeous. It had a huge balcon overlooking the edge of the city. It also had a large bridge that seperated the old city from the new part of the city. We had some beer at a restaurant overlooking the balcon with amazing views. And it was by far the best caña of beer I have had thus far in Spain! We left Ronda and drove to Cartijima, which is a town of 200 people 15 kilometers from Ronda to find our hostel.
bridge
this seperates the old and new parts of the city. it is almost as tall as the Statue of Liberty After driving in the dark along a winding road, we found the place we were supposed to park to walk to the hostel. We did find it and were greeted by "Botz" who was a lively British man. We were welcomed by a fire and some delicious beer. After talking and finding our 8-person room to be shared by the 4 of us, Botz took us to the local "bar" which actually had quite the alcohol selection. Dad and Botz had some sherry, Ceci had some beer, mom a glass of wine, and me a "wikicoke" . After being there for a while, we declared it was time to go to bed, and the drunken bar owner told us the total would be only 10 euros. Cant beat that.
Friday morning we awoke around 8am and got dressed and ready to head out. Botz fixed us a breakfast of cornflakes, fresh homemade bread, and bacon & eggs. We drove Gibraltar, but were denied access because Ceci & I brought our spanish residency cards but not our passports. So we headed on to Chipiona where we would be staying for the weekend. After we arrived in Chipiona, we had
to call the hostel to find our way there, but true to word, it was directly on the beach. We were told that Carnaval was supposed to be taking place in Chipiona for the weekend. so we put on our mardi gras beads and walked to find the city center. But it was too early for much to be going on, so we walked back to the hostel for mom and dad to rest. Ceci and I walked to the cathedral and then did some window shopping. Around 8 we walked back into the city center and got some more cañas and were greeted by large crowds of people. We came prepared with our mascarade masks. We found a bar with self service tabs and had a ball drinking beer at the pub. They also served good mexican food which was a welcome change for me! There was a live band playing outside the bar so we went to watch and dance. Many old and young people alike were out celebrating. They were all dressed up. It was a fun evening.
Saturday morning we woke up early to drive to Cadiz. We started neear the Plaza España and saw the
murallas- which are the walls that line the city and overlook the ocean. We saw the Parque de Genoves which had lovely trees. Our last stop was the beautiful cathedral which took 130 years to build, and therefore is composed of two different architectual styles- the bottom is baroque and the top is neoclassical. It was rainy to start the day, but finally the sun came out.
We drove back to Chipiona and dad and I took a walk down the beach to enjoy the sun and look for shells. It was nice. We went to dinner at a lovely restaurant right on the ocean and had delicious paella. We just went back to the hostel to rest.
Sunday morning we woke up to drive back to Priego. Mom and dad got all of their things to head back to Malaga to start their hike on Monday morning. It was a nice, but tiresome weekend.
Its still cold and rainy here in Priego, so hopefully the weather will get nice again!!
