Well, my plans changed just a bit today... I spent the morning at the alcazar de los reyes cristianos which is a massive castle building of islamic architecture, but was designed and built by christians! I´ve included a picture of the building. The entire city of Cordoba is a mixture of arab, christian, and jewish heritage. I think there is much to learn from this combination. I had planned to go to Granada tomorrow morning, but as its turning out, I won´t go until evening time. I´m just really enjoying the chance to feel out the southern culture here in Cordoba. It is another extremely hot day. I´m going to bike up to a river in a while with some natives. Apparently it´s this amazing place that you can swim and enjoy the countryside. I´m pretty ... read more

Well, the arabic influence is stronger than I had anticipated in Andalucia. The buildings are amazing... it doesn´t feel anything like what I know of ¨Spain¨here... but it is still very beautiful! The sky is so impressive. I did not see a cloud all day long. NOT ONE! The sun just went down (it´s 11:30pm) and the stars are amazing. Nothing like a beautiful night´s sky from the roof of a building! By the way, I just checked the temperature... it´s still over 90 degrees! (Dad, you would hate this place!!) Don´t worry, there is air conditioning! I had arabic food tonight for dinner. My hostel-mate is from Brazil and she took me to this great little place with wraps... it´s called de kebab or something like that. Really delicious! Well, it´s been another long day. ... read more

hello everyone!! After leaving the hostel this morning, I walked the entire way to the train station to drop my luggage. I knew that it was going to be a long walk, but it was a nice opportunity to see the city. The green spaces in Madrid are beautiful. The train station was an interesting experience. I stood in a line for about 45 minutes waiting to purchase my ticket. I ended up buying a return trip while I was there because the thought of doing that again was ridiculous! I was also able to leave my big rolling bag there and can pick it up when I pass through on my way to Salamanca next week. One detail to share, the train station in Madrid has an indoor rain forest! It is really neat, full ... read more

April 25, 2008 I thought I would finally be able to spend the whole day with my parents, but CC-CS thought it would be a good idea to split the students up from the parents on our trip to Cordoba today. Needless to say, I don’t think anyone was too happy with that, but we moved on! When we arrived in Cordoba, we went to the Mesquita, a former mosque. It was really interesting to see, especially after all the Cathedrals I see nowadays, but no worries, the Christians thought it would be a good idea to build a Cathedral in the middle of the mosque, so I was able to see one of those too! After the Mesquita, we went to a synagogue, one of only three left in Spain after the Spanish Inquisition. It ... read more

My friends Amanda and Jamie and I decided to head to Córdoba for a day trip during Semana Santa. Semana Santa is really big in Andalusia and all the cities have their own set of original floats. The bus there was really cheap so we took the first one out in the morning. Once we got to Córdoba, we got on the bus to get to the center of the city and got off at a random stop because we noticed a cute church on a side street. From there we started exploring the city... wandering around random streets and hoping we were heading in the general direction of La Mezquita (the enormous mosque). Sure enough, we stumbled upon the outer wall of the Mezquita and began our walking tour. It was nice to be in ... read more

Cordoba is one of the oldest and largest cities in Spain. In the 10th century Cordoba was one of the largest cities in the world. Like the rest of Spain, Cordoba was once under Islamic rule. In fact, Cordoba is home to what use to be the second largest mosque in the world; which was built in the 700s. However, during the Reconquista the "Mezquita" was transformed into a Catholic Cathedral. Besides the Mezquita, we also saw the Judaria, or Jewish quarter, and the old synagogue. Cordoba is also famous for the flower pots filled with red flowers hanging from the sides of building walls. Although it has one of the most fascinating cathedrals in all of Europe, Cordoba as a whole was not very impressive. Other than the city center, the city was fairly trashy. ... read more

I can see this project is going to take on a life of its own. My original plan had been to update the blog weekly but.... I can see that if I leave it that long I will be writing a book every time I log on! Yesterday we travelled to Cordoba, which lies about 160 km North West of Granada. A beautiful cross country drive through miles and miles of undulating hills covered with olive groves and the mountains off in the far distance. We stopped in a tiny village and sat in the square for our morning coffee. All the locals did a double take as they drove by and saw us sitting there - I think it was the Tilley hat that confused them. It is a good thing it was Sunday and ... read more

Hola, 16 JUNE - Saturday • Well, bright and early Saturday morning, we all awoke, ate the questionable hotel breakfast, loaded the bus and made for Atocha train station, where were going to take the AVE, Spain's high-speed train, to Córdoba. I'm a big fan of trains and I'm also a big fan of going fast, so I was excited. Not as excited as I'd have been if I'd gotten more than 5 hours of sleep the night before, but still, excited. The AVE hums along at about 200 miles per hour and we completed what would have been a five-hour bus ride in about 1:45. It was cool; I'd try to look out the window and focus on items and it was impossible to do if they were close to the train. The farther ... read more

When we arrived this well dressed man standing on the street corner asked us if we were lost. We were kind of taken aback at his friendliness, and were half expecting someone to come by and swipe our bags as we chatted with him (we had only walked a few blocks away from the bus stop with our luggage in tow). When we told him what street we were searching for, he proceeded to tell us what a great neighborhood it was. He seemed genuine, and this was our introduction to the sometimes surprising friendliness of southern Spain. It really is true, however that you leave an even greater impression on people when you make an effort to learn the language. At times, people don't believe we are from the States, but they quickly remark ... read more

Hola! I was in Cordoba this past weekend for the festival of plazas there. It was really cool. Didn't see as many plazas as I expected to, but that's all good. The ones we did see were really pretty and nice, so that's what counts. It was interesting travelling around with Monica and her friends. Of course, we ended up at the wine tasting place at the festival! Ugh, if I never see wine again after this trip I think I'll be okay with that. I also never knew it was "rude" to say no to trying someone's wine, but apparantly it is! lol Anyway, I have pictures but there's not too much to tell. We did go out to a discoteca on Saturday night though, and didn't return back to the apartment until like ... read more
