my pension Pr. Jozef
Pr. stands for 'near', not Prinz etc. That’s a medical joke folks! - I am on Warfarin (aka rat poison!) as an anti-blood coagulant for years. I am in fact semi moved off the almost total beer diet of Czech/Austria cos they actually make wine here (Slovenia that is – although they do in Austria, mostly white). However having had a rather nice radler (fruity beer) with lunch in Linz I tried one here with dinner on arrival in Bled. I was somewhat surprised to see it labeled pivo (beer) but also grapefruit, and also only 2.5% alcohol, half normal. As a result it is a bit fruity, but not too much, and also quite light and easy to drink. And yes I did have another as a very late snack at 5pm on top of the castle here in Bled, along with a nice red pepper soups with scampi/shrimp in it – spectacular pix attached.
I decided to spend 2 nights here, on account of the supposed spectacular scenery. And yes the views around the lake can be very nice, with the church on the little island down at the end of the lake. Which is also partly set up for the world rowing champs in

from my balcony (house or big woodshed?) Aug./Sept. this year (last year they were on Lake Karapiro near my sisters at Cambridge in NZ). Last night when I arrived I really got a bit of the view of the lake then ate at a local food resto – which meant quite nice (oven-baked he said) calf liver and onions with some grilled veges. Then the local cake which is like a very dignified custard slice – a huge piece, quite light really surprisingly.
This morning 17 June dawned fairly overcast but then cleared up a bit and was sunny – but I was doing things on the Net etc around the pension – which is like a large family home with about 8 guest rooms. There is a long balcony along the back so had a chat last night to the 4 Californian ladies, all around 50’s-60’s, from next door who were touring around in a rented Ford Focus and were going to be doing a cruise down the Adriatic coast by the sounds from Trieste or so down to Dubrovnik – definitely one place that would be almost worth doing a cruise. Finally got going, visited the post office for stamps and headed in the
direction of the bluff upon which the castle stands. Although I did not directly find the church over that way, its steeple does however appear in one or two of the snaps I am sure. Found a path up to the castle and walked up. 8E. to get in but the view is almost worth it alone, certainly from the restaurant terrace. The museum was also quite interesting as to the history of the area thru the Iron and Bronze Ages etc. At 5pm took the soup and fruit beer stop already referred to then found a path down the mountain thru the forest to the lake and began the essential perambulation of the lake. This does of course give you many different views of the island and church and also from the right angles the castle etc.
Rather than going back to the pension and getting changed decided to eat while still out and find my way home while still vaguely light (I had got totally lost last night in amongst the maze of irregular angled small lanes around the pension and it was only the detailed map that finally put me right). That place to eat was

with inevitable Japanese the Osterija Peglez’n which was basically an Italian joint. Somewhat surprised after ordering gnocchi to get an entire small frypan full of them with coarsely chopped ham/prosciutto and rocket. I had a tuna steak for 2nds, with some grilled veges. Then a pannacotta dessert for afters. With 250ml carafe of white wine della casa this was 30E, about $40, so pretty good value.
