Bled / Vintgar Gorge Friday 8th February 2008 A sight for sore eyes is Lake Bled. 50 minutes by train from Ljubljana, in Slovenia’s north west, a blue, sprawling lake sits in tranquillity beneath the Julian Alps. Bled Castle sits high above the lake providing a platform for photographers, travellers, and locals alike. In the centre of the lake sits Bled Island, hosting the fantastically romantic Pilgrimage Church of the Assumption of Mary.
After a wander next to the lake we made our way up to Vintgar, where the river Radovna flows through a vast four kilometer gorge. The crystal clear water is drinkable and thoroughly enjoyable after a long trip through the gorge. John found it necessary to hang precariously over the edge of the gorge at every opportunity to take ‘unique shots’.
After navigating several miles of quiet streets and dusty trails back to Bled, we ended our time there at Bled Castle. The view over the lake was dramatic as the sun gradually sank behind the towering Julian Alps.
