After the pace and drinking of Krakow, I was due to a break from my holiday. This is where the hostel the Ginger Monkey fits into things. The problem with getting from Krakow to anywhere is that the Tatras Mts are in the way and so you must train or bus around them. The ginger monkey however is perfectly located as a stop over point between Krakow and Bratislava or Budapest or Prague. It cuts down the travel time between this destinations in half. After a 2 hr bus ride from Krakow to Zakopane and the waited an 1 hr for a 6 seater minibus to to take me to the border town of Lysa Polana. Got of the minibus with one other slovakian girl and walked across the border bridge and she informed me that ... read more

I've been moving from south Poland to Slovakia to Lviv,Ukraine(here now). I haven't had access to computer long enough to upload photos,so will try to catch up tonight. Tricky using Ukrainian computers in Internet cafe, but someone in hostel had faster computer so I could download pics from camera to flashdrive. I'll describe places from last four days. One of the neat things about Europe is that you can cross most borders easily and enter a new country for the afternoon. Friends from Gorlice took me for a drive into Slovakia on Saturday afternoon. We went to Bardejov (not on this website). I'm uploading photos blind, (can't see them when I choose photos so if things are not jiving, gowith the flow). I was surprised that the main square in Bardejov was empty for a ... read more

Dobry Den everyone. We are now in Slovakia in the High Tatras. We got here last night and have been enjoying the views of the peaks above us. We have been enjoying local slovak foods including pasta with nuts, pierogis and something called the Robbers Purse. Today we took a cable car to the peak. We were up about 2634m. Beautiful views above the clouds and we even had a cup of tea at the peak. Took a ton of photos. Tomorrow we head to Bratislava and then onto Budapest. Missing you guys, wish you were here. Enjoying the cooler temperatures here in Slovakia. love Katy... read more

Spis Castle is a very big very old ruin of a castle and very famous. It is on quite a little hill but the site is very well chosen as it’s visible in any direction and obviously good at guarding all around. On the road we went thru a very long tunnel— 5 kilometres of very high tech roading—as we came out there was the castle a few km away framed in the opening of the tunnel -guarding the high tech road as well and a great example of the high tech many centuries ago compared with high tech now. You climb up and pay to go in and get a free audio guide—they have these at all the places now. This one gave stories and legends about the castle as well which was very interesting. ... read more

Day one - Popradske Pleso 22/08/07 Today we made the journey from Poprad (the main transport hub of the high Tatras) to Propadske Pleso, a mountain lake that lies at an elevation of about 1500m in the High Tatra Mountains in Northern Slovakia. We first had to catch the train from Proprad up to Stary Smokovec where we bought a hiking map and small book detailing some of the different hikes in the Tatras - an indispensable purchase we thought, and so far has given us lots of inspiration for planning our activities over the next few days. After filling up on some breakfast (delicious vege soup and bread), we found a left luggage place in Stary Smokovec where we dropped off our two small bags (filling them up with as many non-esentials as we could) ... read more

The tourist info lady didnt warn us that we´d be hiking through snow and dara was not surprisingly a bit chilly in his shorts. The seccond day we decided to do a long hike (5 hours up and 3 down). We saw 3 pretty waterfalls. Most of the hike was again through snow, the last 2 hours was challanging, Snow was deep and a very steep uphill. When we got to the top everyone was having a beer, so were obliged to reward ourselves with one too! Early Beers Most mornings as we´re having our bowl of cereal we´ve seen people sitting in cafes/bars having beers. Today was ... read more
