but the town signs are still as grand as ever
the town of Achinsk starts to emerge from the smog
another afternoon, another forest
another morning, another forest
oops! we didn't spot this sign last night
camping in the forest - a change from camping on the steppe
racing the Trans-Siberian Express - we're back on the Trans-Siberian Highway heading east
sometimes its cultivated, sometimes it grassland dotted with wild flowers
occasionally there's patches of open land amongst the trees
.which stretch as far as the eye can see - in fact it stretches 7000km, all the way to Magadan
east of Barnaul the scenery changes again - now we're in the taiga forest
locals sunning themselves on the banks of the River Ob in Barnaul
road-side cemerties have gone and are replaced by onion domed chapels
the European style houses are replcaed by rows of 'gingerbread' cottages
its all change as soon as we cross the border
