Dad they are The Allards I think, they owned a clothing store in town and Aunt M says she knows the dress shop.. haha.. So THEN his wife has been to Russia before to check out some of the building sights in the far easter parts.. YES, believe it or not, in Anadyr and she has met my cousin Bob.. small world eh, they were a really great couple..

I'm in Time Online, Moscow's biggest and most famous netcafe. Billy Idol's 'Rebel Yell' is pumping on the stereo and I've just spent half an hour waiting for two skater boys with hardly any English to get my wi-fi working on my laptop. Finally they called in a guy who I knew was top brass because he was wearing a tie pin, and he sorted me out. So without further ado, Day 1, September 9th Day 1 was bureaucratic and arduous and has no pictures, but it does have a quite funny menu, so bear with me. Shamanic journeys often start with a difficult bit that you have to overcome by force of will in order to get to the good bit. Well, Siberia is full of shamans, so it figures that this one starts off ... read more

...But now it's day 3 and I'm heading off on the Trans-Siberian Railway to Irkutsk in just a few hours. I'll be on the train for four days. I'm stupidly excited about this. I am a train geek, yes. But if there's a netcafe over there by Lake Baikal I'll be able to post about the great day we had yesterday in Moscow. Propaganda! War stories! The House of Tears! Lenin's waxen corpse! The Heroes of Communism! Havah Nagilah! And hopefully some pictures too... ... read more

Nadia, our Moscow Buddy, meets us in the lobby after the breakfast of semolina and honey (actually quite yum). I’m relieved the guide is her and not the spivvish guy with scary eyes who’s wandering round. Outside it’s a glorious day, already hot at ten o’clock. It’s only 7am in Ireland but I’m not feeling it. I feel fine. As we walk to the Metro she tells us she comes from a city where everyone works in aviation, which wasn’t shown on the map until a few years ago. There were perks to living in a secret city - they didn’t have to queue for food as long as people elsewhere did. I tell her both our parents worked in Dublin Airport, but it’s not quite the same. (If Swords were a secret the world wouldn’t ... read more

A 'riddle wrapped in a mystery inside an enigma...'. The 'Iron Curtain', the 'Russian Bear', the 'Great Game'... vivid images but what does all this mean today? And what can you learn of the famous Russian soul armed only with a few words of the language and a Trans-Siberian railway ticket? My expectations were low as I picked my way across the mini-potholes littering the platform at Belorusskaya Station. I did, however, have my own Russian Bear to help me through the culture shock and language barrier: negotiating potholes both literal and metaphorical. Vyachaslav, an aeronautical engineer, had come crashing into my sleeping car at Hanover. A high-flying scientist in the Cold War, he had been brought low by the botched reforms of Perestroika and the rise of the oligarchs. Now he survived on $200 a ... read more

It's been 10 days since i left home in gothenburg. Three rough days i had in Moscow. First day my friend anton came and picked up me and my travelmate rikard at the airport. The traffic was in a terrible jam all night. it was the celebration of moscow's 858th birthday! They had arranged a lightshow that evening and there must have been several millions wanting to go there. Police and military everywhere and all the tickets sold out. We managed to climp one fence and get trough some police lines. We didn't see alot, but some. and it was bombastic. Moscow was showing off the big guns of entertainment. flashing lights in different colours and paterns on the frightening architechtural vulgarity of the university main building, a type of gothic architechture resonating the stalinist era. ... read more

Moscow, the nerve center of the Russian Federation whose landmass constitutes the majority of Asia and formerly extended all the way to the edges of W. Europe; this is the epicenter of the former communist experience where you can find the buildings of the former, but still infamous, KGB, the Kremlin, and the tomb of their still preserved icon Lenin planted firmly in the middle of the Red Square. I noticed immediately upon arrival that Moscow moves fast; it is a city that’s going somewhere and boasts a more reliable subway than any I have ever seen. I could swear that there is a train every 30-45 seconds. It’s a city that’s also struggling with its identity as it attempts to dismantle the pillars of socialism and move towards a market economy; however, from what I ... read more

Boarding our train at midnight tonight for St Petersburg.. our last overnight train in Russia. So have some time to kill and upload some photos. We did a tour of the KGB musuem on our first day which was really interesting.. very James Bond sort of stuff, it was quite cool, and we met an ex-chief from the KGB who was a bit of a character. It was probably one of the best tours we've done on the trip so far. The afternoon we spent in a park outside the city and went on the Feres Wheel and some water slides ... was fun. Today we took a tour of the Kremlin and the Armoury musuem , we were both feeling a bit shady from last night ( and still are ) so it was tough ... read more

hi everyone. thanks for all the comments again, great to hear from u. Well we have made it to moscow after 65 hours on a train through siberia. the train ride has definitely been the highlight of this entire trip so far for us both, it was really amazing, lots of relaxing, reading, playing cards, meeting ppl, eating the the dining cart, drinking lots of russian vodka of course. it was really great. The train stopped in stations everY 5 hours or so for about 20 mins and we'd jump off to buy food from the locals and get some fresh air. We slept a couple of hours each day, hung out the windows or just sat chatting in our compartment letting the hours pass away. We'd do it all over again in a flash except ... read more
