Tyto technicke zalezitosti nam vzdy pomohly odstranit lide z Delica clubu. "Hello might I join your conversation, my name is Edward" is how me, mum and Ange are greeted in perfect English. We're on the boat back from Ruski Island when this cute 8 year old kid approaches us to practice his English. He is very proper and he also tells us, amongst his hobbies are reading books such as Dostoevsky, Tolstoy and Agatha Christie to name a few. He has even read Master and Margarita! Well me and Ange are most definitely impressed, I think back to when I was 8 I was more then likely picking my nose and climbing a tree or something. Maybe I was reading something highly cultured like the Babysitters Club but I never quite made it to Dostoevsky, not even now in my 26 years of living. I made a ... read more

'After a 3 hour flight we were last ones off the plane as Steph had to see the end of the film she had been watching, much to the annoyance of the rest of the passengers on the flight who were waiting on a bus. The bus then turn right and drove all of 50m to the terminal before we headed into the free for all of immigration (only 2 lines open). Other than that we made it into Russia without any problem. Fortunately we had arranged a transfer into the city, as its quite a way from the airport, and after settling into our hotel, had a look round Russia. At this point, the absurdity of what we were about to do started to hit, as we struggled to find a restaurant in the rain ... read more

Coming back from Kamchatka I spent another night in Khabarovsk before catching the train the next evening to Vladivostok. I used the day to update my blog and catch up on some things on the internet – scary how used we got to the internet, 2 weeks without it and you can spend a whole day catching up on the most important things… After an unspectacular overnight train ride, I got off at my final destination: Vladivostok! I cannot really describe what I felt in that moment – something between extreme satisfaction, happiness and surrealism. For so long I was dreaming of doing this trip, getting off the train in Vladivostok I realized: I made it, I actually did :) I took the obligatory picture of the final mark of the Trans-Siberian: Moscow – Vladivostok 9288km. ... read more

Vladivostok can be translated to "possess the east" and is a port city on the pacific and the end of the Trans-Siberian rail line. It houses the Russian pacific fleet in the golden horn bay and was closed off to foreigners during the Soviet era, reopening again in 1991. It is sometimes called the "San Francisco of Russia" due to it being on the ocean and the hilly area on which most of the city sits. The city is the midst of a construction and development boom with a couple of bridges, several large scale hotels and new roads in the works for the APEC summit the city is set to host in 2012. I arrived by train in the afternoon and had arranged to couch surf with a local there called Dimitry. Couch Surfing is ... read more

Our first stop in Russian is Pogranichay and despite arriving 3 hours late our man, Pavel, is still waiting for us. Any sensible person would have just got the bus from the Chinese border straight to Vladivostok and avoided the need to argue with the Russian border guards (complete with guns) and be dropped in the middle of nowhere several miles from the town you are trying to get to. So why did we do it? Because approx. 80km away, at Gaivoron, Dr. Victor Yudin has established a reserve where he has bought up and studied 3 orphaned Amur (or Siberian) tigers. To get there we head cross country through beautiful green rolling hills on red dirt roads. Its all grasslands, no signs of cultivation yet a few miles back, over the border, in China every ... read more

Well the first hurdle was that my BRAND NEW big toothpaste was dismissively thrown in the bin at Tullamarine airport. Oh crap, why didn't I remember that old liquid/gel restriction thing. The flight in cattle class to Soeul, Korea was comfy - not. In-flight entertainment took a dive back to the cave age with no personal consoles, just one big ol' screen up front. Only one decent movie was shown, the second one I had grit-eye too bad to watch and the third one was a Korean movie with english subtitles too small to read plus I had a melon-head in front of me so couldn't see past. The stop-over was first class though. I was put up in the Hyatt Hotel near the airport and got a free dinner in their restaurat. Also enjoyed the ... read more

Yes, Yes, Yes, We did it !!! 9289km by train !!! Finally arrived in Vladivostok ;-) For the second part of the Trans-Siberian, we shared the room with a ... military guy !!! Funny, in Russia, we've met almost only people working in the Marines... It's like in this country, if you can't become a gangster... euh meaning an Oligark, you're future is in the Army !!! With this guy, Vova, we experienced the same type of relationship as we already did here: you need 2 days to start having a friendly relationship even if we didn't share the same language... After this period, we start having fun, share drinks and food !!! He was a Bouriat (Mongol ethnic group living in the south of Russia, practicing boudhism and Chamanism). For this reason, we were thinking ... read more

Joseph Conrad said "I take it that what all men are really after is some form or perhaps only some formula of peace" This is obtained by simply holding the latest in beer bottle technology - finger grips on the bottle! And then turn it over and there is another feature - indented in the bottom is a beer bottle opener! Ussuriysk may be Russia, but there are not many Ladas, mostly Japanese cars with the steering wheel on the wrong side. Out in the bush, the GAZ 66 and the UAZ 469 still rule. Another surprise - the food is great, the accomodations in the refurbished Soviet era hotel are comfortable (they still have watchful ladies on each floor), and I had my first $10.00 beer here (in Ussuriysk) Yes, they still have the official ... read more
