As of yesterday, February 5, I have my Russian Visa for travel to Russia in May. It is a single entry visa, valid for up to 30 days. Russian visas cannot be obtained at the border. Travel insurance is also required for the duration of any trip here.
But this visa requires something else: Invitation to Russia from a host person or organization. Yes, you must have this before they will issue a visa. Fortunately, the company from which I am getting my Trans Siberian Railway tickets is my sponsor. The company is called Real Russia, and is based in the U.K. But they may ask for more. The Consular Division of the Embassy also has the right to call the applicants for an interview and request, if needed:
• a bank statement from the applicant;
• a statement from the employer regarding the applicant's wages for the preceding year/ half year, or month;
• medical insurance valid in the country to be visited and fully covering the period of the first trip;
• documents regarding the applicant's ownership of property in the country of his citizenship;
• a certificate on the makeup of the applicant's family. The Russian ruble is the official currency, as it was for the Soviet Union before their dissolution. The ruble is divided into 100 kopeks.
