Today was my first day back in lessons, after staying away from them for a little more time than I was allowed. In Lyudmila Giorgevna's class we watched the news, with reports from both Finland and England, then we talked about the Chernobyl disaster in 1986 as wednesday will be the 20th anniversary. In the afternoon I walked around Tver for three hours looking for a barbers shop. I went to every street that I know at least once, and found only a beauty salon for women and a sign saying 'parikmakherskaya', pointing to a basement which was almost pitch dark and where the dirty brick staircase was falling apart. When I got back to obshezhitie Kolya told me there was a good one one on the way from university to the post office, so I ... read more

The only thing I did this morning was try a new type of toothpaste, Zhemchug, which is flavoured with sea salts rather than mint. Linda left at lunchtime, to get on a train to Petersburg then a bus home to Helsinki. We'll definitely see each other again, hopefully while I'm in Finland this summer. There was another thunderstorm in the late afternoon, which almost put me off my essay-planning. ... read more

I let my lethargy catch up with me today and stayed in the flat for most of the morning and afternoon, not doing much apart from giving my essay some more thought. When I went to the supermarket at lunchtime to buy a pizza I had just 90 kopecks too little money - even after hurriedly fumbling in the pockets of my jeans for a minute and pulling out four one rouble coins - so I had to hold everyone up and scamper to the cash machine. In the late afternoon the sky turned dark purple and there was a loud thunderstorn directly over the obshezhitie, which cannoned rain and even hail onto the windows and flooded the courtyard in minutes. When the strom cleared the evening was clear and bright. There was a leaving gathering ... read more

I got up fairly early today. It would have been good to stay in bed but I am behind on all my work so my conscience wouldn't let me. Michael and Tamzin went to Petersburg overnight so I was the only RLUS person in Tver to meet the director Dr. Bivon, on his tour of the centres where British students study. He phoned ahead to say he would be at the university at 11 so I waited for him in the language centre. At 1, Lyudmila Georgevna told me that he wouldn't be coming. What a waste of two hours when I am so busy. The last time I spoke on the phone with Natalia in Moscow we agreed that I would be here to meet him. When I checked my emails a while later there ... read more

Another quiet day, the last of a low couple of weeks. Some photos instead, to draw a line between what has happened and what is to come. Pictures of people were taken by Nicolas (Kolya), and I have put the latest set of photos up by making a CD on his computer. Click on them to enlarge, as always.... read more

My only job today was to reserve two rooms at Hotel Fatima in Kazan. Finding the email address was easy enough, but I had no idea how to write a formal email in Russian. I enquired politely and received a reply almost straight away. I checked it ten times for grammar mistakes before sending it, but when I read it back to myself I wasn't sure whether I had "reserved" the rooms or "demanded" to have them. Fatima is the same hotel that we stayed in when the Yartek group went to Kazan - beautifully decorated with whitewashed walls, exotic plants and Arabic art. Liisa brought me a CD of Finnish music today, and her walkman to play it on. She had even spent all six hours on the train to Petersburg translating the lyrics into ... read more

I went to the market this morning. I looked for some fresh bread and ham, but couldn't even find the food hall building without Yulia to guide me! Instead I walked through one of the clothes markets, and decided to buy a jumper to take to Kazan with me. My voice gave me away as not Russian after three sentences talking to the seller, and we talked about England and Tv.G.U while I haggled him down from 650 roubles to 550. The afternoon and evening were very quiet, occupied with the everyday parts of Tver life. Strolling around the almost empty aisles of Olimp supermarket choosing lasagne, 'Volga' beer and Z.A.O hleb biscuits for example. Myself, Tamzin and Michael sat in our kitchen until very late, talking about evolution and our translations. It may not have ... read more

I thought a day of doing nothing would be the best plan. It was quiet, but not peaceful. My head is cluttered with calculations at the moment, rather than homework or seeing Russia. There is still time to change what I will do between leaving Tver on the 16th May and going home in on the 17th July. If I stay with Ana in Popasnaya for a fortnight (rather than rent a flat in Kiev for six weeks) it will cost me ten times less; and living with the Kovalchuks again will improve my Russian much more than one lesson per day at a language school. When she flies to America in early June I can stay in Kiev for a long weekend over my 21st birthday - hopefully with my Dad - then from there ... read more

As I woke up this morning I was thinking about what happened yesterday within five seconds. I missed the excursion with my group, and instead spent 4700 roubles on a new mobile phone before sitting in the internet room all afternoon emailing people at RLUS to ask about insurance. I called in at Dimitrii Andreevich's office on the way back, to see if he had heard any news from the militsiya about my laptop. He was surprised, even raised his voice, at my question. As far as the international office (Tv.G.U's representatives for foreign students) is concerned the blame is with me so it is not their problem any more. I had the sick feeling all afternoon, that everything my brain could find to think about was negative. Michael locked the door of the flat on ... read more

I woke up this morning feeling low. The last week has been hard with so many difficult feelings filling my head, and I took the day off lessons to try and think clearly again. When I got back to my flat from the post office at half past three my lap-top and mobile phone had been stolen. My phone wasn't on the kitchen table where I left it, and when I looked up my computer wasn't there either. A man walked out of the appartment as I was walking along the corridor - as I didn't know anything had been taken then I thought nothing of it. Stupidly it didn't occur to me to ask him who he was, or even notice what he looked like. If he wasn't stopped by the woman in reception it ... read more
