Saavuin tanne kuuluisaan Transylvaniaan pari paivaa sitten jahtaamaan Draculan haamua. Ensimmaisena paivana taisin muistuttaa itse haamua unenpuutteen vuoksi. No, ei siina mitaan, maistoimme shotit tata erikoisuutta. Mausta en osaa niin sanoa mitaan, vahvaa oli ja polt... read more

When we left Shigisoara we took a detour to visit a unesco fortified monastry. On route we went through many colourfull villages, houses brightly coloured, even had a few kids chasing our van. Scarily, one tried to hang on to the ladder at the back of the van. These were some of the predominantly gypsy villages. Saxons We picked up 3 German hitchhikers. One of the girls was working in Romania as a volunteer (helping the Romani Gypsy children) for the last 8 months and spoke a bit of Romanian. We were also in luck as when we got to the village where the monastry was the German girl leaped out to ask for the key for the monastry. We realised some of the elderly people in the village only spoke German! This was originally a ... read more

The myths and legends about Transylvania enticed us to go a bit further into Romania than we initially planned. For those who know me(Shilpa) well, Im not the biggest fan of dark, scary, or vampire stuff so Dara loaded the van up with those extra few cloves of garlic and started sharpening the wooden stakes. This sealed the deal for me, and we headed into dracula land...!! Left my Appendix in Romania.....(Dara) As Dara cannot recall much of his first day in Transylvania I'll attempt to explain the longest 2 days of our trip. Well, we thankfully in hindsight decided not to wild/free camp and stayed in a lovely dutch owned campsite in the small villave of Sovota. In the morning we did a hike up some hills and to cool down had a long swim ... read more

The Hollywood of Romania, Transylvania. Thats what this area should be called just because of the white nametag signs on both Brasov an Rasnov mountains, quite funny to look at :) I arrived on Tuesday at midday after 16hrs on the night train, an experience in itself. 6 beds, 3 on each side in a small cabin, shared with two romanians that couldnt speak english. One was so large that she could nearly not fit in the bed space and was a rival for the snoorer in Newquey, not much sleep when she was! The other seemed quite nice, she put on her laptop and we wached the movie 300 with Romanian subtitles. The train stopped 4 times between 10 an 4am for border an passport checks, got a few stamps from that peice of ... read more

"Use the blessed chance - that of being a human - to make the world better, fairer and more beautiful, not only for mankind but for the whole nature!" Herman Oberth - one of the founding fathers of rocketry and astronautics. After 3 wonderful days in Sighisoara we were heading towards Sibiu. Bought ourselves tickets to the mini-bus and 2 hours later there we were! Since Friday the weather was very very hot and the Sunday noon ride was a nightmare - I ve promised my self I ll never travel in a mini-bus (peasants traveling with frozen lambs in their bags, bicycles and what ever u can think of). Sibiu is the European Cultural Capital of 2007 in partnership with Luxemburg and it had to be on my itinerary list. Of course we planned for ... read more

... Life is the road and I wanna keep going Love is a river and I wanna keep flowing, Life is a road now and forever.. a wonderful journey! Veni, vidi, vici.. actually Sighisoara conqured me!... nothing I could write can describe the feeling I had while I was staying there... First thing I noticed when I arrived there was the train station...not very clean and first impression always counts for foreigners. Coming from Bucharest Im very used to crazy taxi drivers who try to overcharge the clients but I was amazed to meet really polite and honest people. It was less than 1 Euro from train station to city center, I gave him 2 Euro and he said: "miss thats too much, I cant accept it"... THAT MUST HAVE BEEN A KODAK MOMENT.... very soon ... read more

Dear All, It has been a while since our last update but in retrospect the pictures, until recently have been rather dull. But now that the dark and stormy months seem to be passing into a spring time we are coming out of hibernation and have some pictures and stories to share. For the most part, life in Odorhei/Undvarhely is increasingly busy. Alecia is deep into the fruit project with Agora and we have had several meetings with various folks in the villages regarding re-vitalizing traditional fruit drying practices and creating some traditional product focused cooperatives. People have seemed quite excited. A cynic might say just because there is a promise of income (though even if this were the only case, who could blame folks subsisting on less than $140/month?) but I think the reality ... read more

HaHA! Score Tally: Scammers: lots Emma: 1! Romania seems about as corrupt as Bulgaria I arrived in Bucharest train station off the sleeper (read: tired after having been got off the train at the turkish border and kept outside in the cold at 3am for an hour just so I could get stamped out through their damn border controls who are too lazy to come on the train to do their job faster than making everyone get dressed and off the train and line up and stamped and back on the train before they can switch around the carriages and split em up and join em back together so each carriage goes to a different place). And a nice man asks if i need help (i think aha not this time buddy) I say no ... read more
