We went up a hill after getting keys from somebody. It was very pretty. We did a lot of videos and pictures. We went up a clock tower. We tried to hurry down before the bells did not ring, but they did. We went to a park and I saw a lot of snow and jumped in it. I got wet and daddy brought everything but socks so I had to use my gloves on my feet. - Sofia ______________________________________________________________________________________________________________ A couple hours and we arrived in Sibiu. This was a really cool city and we stayed right in the middle of the old town at the Old Town Hostel right in the middle of one of the big squares. We stayed there for 2 nights. We checked out the old town area when we arrived ... read more

We have each settled into a morning routine. It's nice to have separate bedrooms and two bathrooms. Only one shower, tho. And what a shower ... it is a tiny stall shower installed in a corner of a small bathroom. It is a removable shower head, and we discovered that the reason it's removable is because it's otherwise impossible to get far enough away from the shower to rinse off. The shower stall also leaks very badly, so that when you are done showering there is half an inch of water on the bathroom floor. Conveniently there is a drain built into the floor for all this water. After returning I spoke to a friend who was in the Peace Corps in Bulgaria and stayed in similar but non-updated accommodations ... she says that in the ... read more

Romania's got beauty, indeed. I think I've never denied it, but I've never embraced the idea, either. But ROMANIA HAS GOT BEAUTY. Beauty we do not promote or capitalise on, but nevertheless Romania's got tremendous natural and man-made beauty. History. Culture. Despite the horrible weather, I went into raptures about the historical monuments, cathedrals and sites we visited this past weekend. Amazed, delighted, mesmerised, bewitched. In addition, the German influence has definitely left its mark on the level of culture, civilisation and people's life-style. 'Thank you', 'sorry' and 'pardon' are just as often heard here as anywhere else in the civilised world. Amen to that! SIBIU, formerly known as the European capital of culture is a little paradise where everything old remains untouched and keeps on telling ... read more

It is really cool that the 7th grade kids remember me from my last visit. If I'm fortunate enough to return I will certainly remember at least some of them personally. The teacher was about 10 minutes late to class so when I asked the class if everyone was there and they said "yes," I took it on myself to begin the lesson. They said their current assignment was to write a short paper on Leonard da Vinci. The easy thing to do was to have them read out loud portions of their papers. It soon became apparent a number of kids were cut&pasting from the same web site. I lectured them about original work and not using words they don't understand. Third grade kids are just beginning to take their English studies seriously and they ... read more

A successful tourist city is a double-edged sword. It provides jobs and prominence. But for someone like me it is more tourist shops than normal shows, more out-of-towners than locals and the question of the town's true identity. I spent the better part of the day with a couple classes of second graders. Their knowledge of English is so limited than it's really just about paying attention to them. I gave each a decorated pencil and a big smile as souvenirs. I met up with a friend of a friend (cyber-style) for an apa minerale and an hour or so of conversation. Lucien is a very "pay it forward" kind of guy and we talked about small clean-up projects he and his friends do, my book project, politics, schools and more. I got to briefly meet ... read more

This is the day I was looking forward to. Some time with the kids. N. drove us to school because of his after-school plans. I walked around the center a bit until the English classes started. Word spread that I was there, as many of the older kids may have remembered my last visit. Unfortunately, I really couldn't identify any of them but they flocked around be nevertheless. Their bright faces were inspiring and their excitement was palpable. Carmen brought 6A and 6B together in one room in a special session. It was one way to make best use of my presence without interupting the flow of the school day. There were 6 long benchrows of kids and I placed myself in the middle of them, as opposed to in front. The Romanian way of teaching ... read more

Meal time at N.'s house in Sibiu is always a glorious hodge-podge affair of food grabbed from the fridge supplemented by the ocassional new aspect. Breakfast, lunch or dinner there is not a firm division of types of food for each one. After breakfast Nick and I went for a brisk walk in the warm sun to attend the weekly get-together of the local philatelic association... the half that meets in the smoke-free environment. They have a storefront the club uses. We stopped at a church for a quick visit and then N. and the guys discussed a major philatelic event they are hosting next week. Collectors from all over the country will converge and buy, sell and swap. Afterwards, at N.'s suggestion we relaxed a while. Regretably I missed arriving in time to go to ... read more

Sibiu day 7-8 (June 13-14) A return trip in our van with the wooden bench seat to Sighisoura where we caught a local mini bus to Sibiu. The bus was packed but we arrived in good time our driver handling the crazy overtaking of other vehicles. A taxi took us to a hotel a bit out of town, so we would need to relay on taxi’s to get us around. A visit to the local art museum, and a walk around the old town was the order of the afternoon. Sibiu had recently been the European Capital of Culture and so was looking pretty pristine. The following day we had a full schedule, taking a private van to a glacial lake in the nearby mountains. The road up the mountain was pretty windy, but worth the ... read more

Ok, as I already thought, things never go exactly as you plan them. Due to technical problems (this pc of mine seems to be older than I am - and I am not getting any younger either = ) I couldnt upload my pics from the last days of travel around Sibiu. Finally here I am, hoping that I ll finish what I've started a few weeks ago. Although the plan was to visit most of the saxon fortified churches around Sibiu, Friday a few friends from Agnita and UK invited us on a fishing trip (70 km away from Sibiu) near the small village of Bradeni. Of course we planned to visit the churches from Agnita & Bradeni but also enjoy our time in the nature. Well, after the Medias experience we were all exhausted. ... read more

The next day we were planning to take the bus to Medias, then from there the bus to Biertan and after visiting the village we would have walked 5 km till the next village, Richis... but because the night before we arrived at the hotel after 11 PM, waking up early in the morning wasnt so easy. Actually we've missed the 11 AM bus to Medias only by 5 minutes. So we decided to take the 12:57 train but after I ve done some calculation our time wasnt enough. The train ride was quite interesting, its been a while since I traveled with the personal train (this train stops in every little station and its driven in slow speed). The ticket costs around 1,5 Euro and it takes 1 hour and a half to get to ... read more
