HE SAID... Today we were travelling southeast from Viscri to Brasov (via Bran Castle). We woke early and headed to the main homestay house for breakfast. We’d dined in an outdoor alcove the night before, but this morning we were under the house in the cellar. It was a very atmospheric setting. We grazed on sourdough bread, cheese, zacusca (eggplant and red pepper spread), scrambled eggs, honey and tea, and it was an amazing start to the day. We headed back to our homestay, organised our packs and waited on the roadside for our minibus to pick us up. We retraced the incredibly rough track out of the village, turned onto the highway and travelled towards Brasov with bygone castles overlooking us from the hills above. It almost felt like they were granting us safe passage ... read more

Last night's quick winter storm passed through and we awoke the next morning with everything covered in a beautiful blanket of fresh snow. Halloween in Romania! Never did I ever think I would be in Romania but here I was getting ready to celebrate Halloween at Dracula's Castle! But first, we got the chance to spend the morning exploring the city of Brasov. We arrived in Brasov around 10am and immediately headed out for a 2 hour walking tour of Brasov's Old Town. The bus let us out near the base of Mt. Tampa, a mountain overlooking Brasov's Old Town. Atop this mountain was a sign of Brasov that was similar to the Hollywood Sign in Los Angeles. Had we more time, it would have been great to take one of the trails to the top ... read more

After a late night of dancing, we were thankful to have a free morning to sleep in as we weren't scheduled to leave Sighisoara until 1:00pm. We had a delicious buffet breakfast in the hotel dining room before venturing back up to the Old Town to explore in the morning daylight. Shea and I bundled up as the morning was blisteringly cold and made our way to do some morning exploring. We basically retraced the same steps we took last night during our walking tour but this time with the advantage of daylight. During last night's tour, we missed just how colorful the Old Town is. Along every street that we walked on, the structures were painted various shades of blue, green, yellow, and orange. We passed small outdoor cafes with inviting terraces which would have ... read more

One! One castle where Vlad Tepes, who rumour has it Bram Stoker based the character Dracula, stayed! Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh! Two! Two castles where Vlad Tepes, who rumour has it Bram Stoker based the character Dracula, stayed! Ahhh, ahhh, ahhh! The next leg of our journey has us heading into the Carpathian Mountains which are north-ish from Bucharest. We rented a car for this part and are glad we did. Getting out of Bucharest was a little frustrating but not more so than any big city at rush hour. Once out, though, it was smooth sailing to Peles Castle. It’s about 1.5-2 hrs outside Bucharest in the Carpathian Mountains. It was the summer palace of Romanian King Carol and was beautiful but insanely ornate. Like someone set of a canon packed with gold leaf in every ... read more

Wednesday 21stJune Vampire Camping Bran Romania customs after crossing the Danube was a slow affair as each vehicle was thoroughly checked and our passport and van documents thoroughly examined. We bought a vignette for seven days and headed to the mountains and the small town of Bran. Initially the landscape of the Danube delta was flat with fields of sunflowers in full bloom interspersed with wheat and other crops. At the pretty town of Campulung, the road started to climb and deteriorate. Road improvements meant frequent stops at temporary traffic lights. Then the storm started and road flooded with the torrential rain. Impatient Romanian drivers and huge articulated lorries added to the excitement as did the fact that the temperature had dropped dramatically from 32 degrees to 14 degrees resulting in a very steamed up windscreen. ... read more

Brasov, orasul atestat documentar in 1252 sub numele latin Corona sau denumirea germana Kronstadt, care inseamna "Orasul Coroana" sub numele latin Corona sau denumirea germana Kronstadt, care inseamna "Orasul Coroana", ambele denumiri fiind oglindite in sigla orasului. We nearly went to Italy – again. Not that there is anything wrong with that but we were in danger of becoming serial visitors, automatically going off to Italy at every opportunity – well, it is pretty fabulous but then there are a whole lot of places that we have never visited that are also pretty fabulous. So we decided to visit Romania, Transylvania specifically. At Bucharest airport we collected our rental car and headed off for our first stop, Brasov, where we would be spending 5 days. We had intended to stay the first two days in Sinaia to be close to Peles Castle and the mountains but after reading that they were closed on Monday and Tuesday (the days we were supposed to be there), we decided it would be better to stay in ... read more

We left Brasov early one day and set off on a mini road trip to Rasnov, Bran and Magura. First stop was 13thcentury Rasnov, a hilltop ruin built by Teutonic knights. We were using google maps and it was pretty reliable but not this time, nothing terrible, just an interesting detour. Instead of directing us to Rasnov town it took us by a gypsy settlement which was quite nice really. Everybody was out working in the fields with their horses and bales of hay, pretty clouds and mountains all around. We drove on a little further up an unpaved road into the forest. On the way we saw quite a few nice birds but nothing else except trees and suddenly google maps intoned “you have reached your destination”. So we turned around and retraced our route ... read more

Trains work better than buses here in Romania and thus I found myself on a fairly old-school one from Bucharest to Brasov; it was one of those classic trains with a side aisle and individual cabins of six seats each, of which mine was shared with three old Romanian ladies. The 10€, 2 1/2 hour ride was comfortable. Now I've visited enough cities around the world to know that the bus network works differently in almost every one of them. In some places you buy your ticket before boarding, in some you buy from the driver and in others you have a dude on the bus who sells you a ticket. Arriving at Brasov's train station, I knew I had to catch bus no.4 and the bus was just about to leave when I arrived so ... read more
