For today we had the plan to go to a festival we had spotted staring bands as Within Temptation, Evanesence and Guns n' Roses. We were also interested in watching the final in the European football championships, and had looked that we might be able to see the end of the game if Guns n' Roses had a good gig, and the complete game if Guns n' Roses sucked.
We had been up quite late last evening enjoying our terrace, so we slept late and after that we went to the same beerhall as yesterday for lunch. We had a sausage plate for two as main course, a little bit too much and a little bit to heavy for us, but we were able to go the whole day on that meal. We then had a coffee at McDonalds (we were looking for a Starbucks or similar, McCafé didn't however quite make it), and after that we set out for the festival.
Near the gates of the festival we found a ticket booth and bought some tickets, and then went through security where they confiscated our big water bottle and our sun screen(!). Luckily we got to keep the
small water bottle we brought with us from Finland, the local waterbottles are made of thin, soft plastic so we have been using Finnish bottles to carry water with us at our day trips.
When we finally got in The Cult was just starting their gig. We had at that point missed Ugly Kid Joe and Within Temptation, on the other hand we weren't that interested in seeing them anyways. I had only hear one or two of the songs The Cult played before, and Johanna had heard even less, so we were a little bit indifferent to the gig, I guess you should always know at least some of a bands music to really enjoy their concert, but the sun was warm (36 degrees!) and the beer was cheap, so we sat down and enjoyed the weather.
The next band to play was Evanesence. Here we actually recognised most of the songs and the band was fun to watch (especially the drummer who looked a little bit like Animal from Muppet show when he played), so even if our main interest was Gn'R we got much more out of this show. After Evanesence had finished playing people
started to move towards the stage. So did we after we had bought a huge box of popcorn and a new round of beer. We had to wait some time for Gn'R to start playing, but when they did it was with firework and explosions.
I didn't have my hopes too high regarding the quality, but Axl Rose still had his voice, and he had gathered some very skilled musicians to replace the old band, so the gig was very good. Every second song was from the old albums (Appetite for destruction, Use your illusion), and the material from Chinese democracy also sounded good. The only thing was it was actually a little bit too long. According to the program they should have played for 3 hours and finished at 23:00, but when we got out it was almost 24:00 and Spain were already done humiliating Italy in the football game. We considered leaving when they in the end had lots of individual performances by the band members, but I still wanted to hear my favourite Gn'R song, Paradise City, which they of course saved until the very end. All in all the gig was however very good, definitely
worth the ticket price!
