We are not in the quietest neighbourhood in Porto and that sure was not helped by their being a soccer (can not bring myself to call it football) game on the TV last night featuring the local team. Thank goodness so few goals are scored or we would never have gotten to sleep. As well there’s a street drunk that’s quite aggressive towards tourists so we have to be a little watchful and a little careful. It’s the first time I’ve been uncomfortable on the streets and it’s a shame that such a lovely place can be ‘spoilt’ by one person. It was a case of me, the solo tourist, as Lee and I thought she would benefit from a snooze in and relax. So off I set with a head full of detailed directions (one ... read more

Typing time to while away the minutes. We are currently somewhere but about half way between Lisbon and Porto based on the duration of the trip and certainly not my understanding of any of the train announcements which I assume have been in Portuguese only. Not an unfair assumption based on the fact we are in Portugal. Many and indeed most of the signs at the station were in Portuguese and English which was reassuring and helpful but most locals speak enough ‘specific’ English to help us. Waits speak menu English, drivers read ‘Google map English’ and ticket sellers know destination and numbers well enough for us to get the message through. Managed to find grilled sardines last night much to my pleasure and the pleasure of an American couple who were close enough to hear ... read more

Our last day in Porto is bitter sweet. We love our apartment and the ladies that run it have been super nice and helpful. We have alot of fun chatting and laughing with them. We don't want to leave but we've covered the city. Today's plan is to see a few things we missed. We walked down to the Crystal palace, which was a few minutes from our place, and toured the grounds. It was really nicely done and had some good views of the city. More exercising at the outdoor gym fur the kids, they love trying out all the machines. We then went to the nearby mall and did some shopping, and picked up a few groceries for the road tomorrow. Everyone seemed to need to get off their feet so we went back ... read more

Ah Porto, so glad that our apartment doesn't suffer from airbnb construction syndrome. It was a great night's sleep compared to Aveiro and there's a coffee machine in the place. What else could you want? We made ourselves a quick breakfast and went to talk to the ladies at the office of the company running the airbnb. They are super friendly and gave us some ideas of where to go and what to see, and better yet, how to get there. They gave us a route that was downhill and walkable that went along the river to see the sights. They also suggested a really nice spot to see the sun set where the locals gather to sit and drink beer or wine. We pretty much took all their suggestions and it helped a lot. We ... read more

We seem to have a knack for booking places with nearby construction, or maybe that is just normal for busy European centers. Woke up at 5:30am and had to close the window as the city started to come alive and was really up when the construction started at 7:30am, literally right outside our window. Im not so upset as the matress in the hostel was not comfortable and Anne and I had sore hips and back. The kids seemed to love their bunk beds. In the end I'm not sure the hostel experience was worth it but it was only for one night so no big deal. It was nice to be right downtown in the action when we went out though. We bought tickets for a traditional boat ride on the canals and they informed ... read more

After a great breakfast in the hotel, today we say adios to Spain and head out to Portugal. Fortunately, Spain and Portugal have a passport agreement between them that allows for easy transfer between then, so when we crossed the border, we didn’t even slow down to interact with the Border Police. According to Dominic, they have the authority to stop us and check our passports, but they don’t usually, and they didn’t this time. As you enter Portugal, there’s about a couple of kilometer stretch of various run down shops. Evidently, before the EU was formed, this was a “no man’s land” which offered tax-free goods as it was neither Spain or Portugal. Since the EU was formed, there are no tax-free zones, so the shops are just a remnant of a bygone era. Once ... read more

Over a year since we have been overseas and it was going to be our last opportunity before the little one arrives. We also had to be careful as to not catch Covid and prevent us from getting to Porto, in the end we made it. We booked an airbnb close to the river front and most importantly opposite our daily Pasties de Nata shop! We arrived the Friday to warm sunny weather which stayed with us until we left on Monday. It definitely made the trip more enjoyable especially given it was mid winter! Our first day we enjoyed exploring along the riverfront on both sides. Starting along the Cais de Ribeira where you can sit in the sun, as it's south facing, and order a drink or some food whilst enjoying the river front ... read more

Lisbon proved to be a wonderful time, but the real reason for our trip with the Chef was just ahead. We conceived our voyage as one that involved food, fun and cruising on a river boat. The conversation started a few years ago at a restaurant in Burlingame, CA when the subject of "where would you like to travel" came up as usual. Brendan mentioned that a river boat cruise in northern Portugal would be quite the adventure. The idea sat on the back burner for a few years, but now the day was upon us, as we traveled north from Lisbon to Porto, where we would float on the Douro River for a week in the luxurious lap of a Tauck cruise. And so, after four days of fun bouncing around Lisbon having a grand ... read more
