I don’t care what anyone says. Front loading washing machines are the work of the devil. Them and ibises and it’s basically the equivalent of hell. I will not be convinced otherwise. Off we set from I Sintra, a last crazy lap around the maybe one way system that snakes its way between all the sights, clogged with tuk tuks and nervous passengers. First stop was Obidos, which is a medieval walled castle city north of Lisbon. Despite ugh another castle from the peanut gallery, we were relatively quick to convince the doubters that it is actually a cute little town. Had a wander along the cobblestone streets and the ugh castle walls before settling on somewhere for lunch. Managed to check out some medieval birds of prey before completing the stroll through the town back ... read more

We woke early to the sound of buses trundling their way up the hill to pick workers up to take them back down to work in Braga city centre or were they bringing pilgrims up to Bom Jesus. Whatever it was, it started early and finished late. We were as always the only Brits on site. We left the french asleep as we hit the road for Guimaraes. A sleepy little city with a castle we wanted to see . The road out was manic with early morning traffic. We had to wind our way through them all as they nipped in and around Suzy from every direction. Discretion being the better part of valour Glenn stuck to his guns and tried to ignore them as we headed out of the way. Rush hour Braga style ... read more

Feeling well-rested after turning in early, we went down to breakfast and then to the São Bento train station to catch the suburban train to Guimarães. Guimarães is famous as the birthplace of the first independent king of Portugal, Alfonso Henriques, and is another UNESCO World Heritage city. This would also take us to a different region of Portugal, the Minho, which is also the birthplace of vinho verde. I'd be needing some after the ticket debacle that ensued. thought I understood the ticketing system correctly and, using our multi-purpose transit ticket, I got two tickets to zone 8, which Guimarães seemed to belong to. Once the ticket man came around, however, this was not the case, and am awkward 5-minute exchange occurred between us. From what I understand, that multipurpose card worked only within greater ... read more

Portugal from Monday 19 to 24 August 2013 We thoroughly loved Portugal, the people, the extensive and effective highway/freeway system, the rugged coastal scenery with sandy coves, the castles and fortresses on the coasts perched up on cliffs, the food, the colourful tiles on walls (with a predominance of blue on white), the white-washed villages, particularly in the southern Algarve region, the mountains, fields of citrus fruit, vineyards, wheat paddocks, sandlewood plantations are all features to love. What we didn’t like was the tolls, both at the booths and overhead cameras (the latter of which we haven’t paid yet as we didn’t get an electronic metre for our car!!!!). We found most people spoke English so it was very easy for us. We spent time driving through the Douro Valley where they grow grapes for port ... read more
